This is our second visit to Cochin and what a little gem this hotel is, its like home from home, the furnishings and decor are amazing, its very well situated and the staff cant do enough to make your stay as comfortable as possible. And yes it is where they filmed the second series on the BBC. Fabulous.

Hidden behind the adjacent street market the hotel was difficult for our taxi driver to find.Close to the Chinese nets and the promenade of Cochin Fort this hotel was a very pleasant surprise. A small hotel with 6 bedrooms. Ours " Jan Van Spall" was large with two double beds, a well appointed bathroom, a beautiful Malabar spruce floor and a large balcony over looking the hotel's small pool and garden. The staff were attentive and very friendly. Dinner was included in the price of our room. There was no menu, just what the chef fancied cooking, which was very good. A great start to out holiday. We stayed two nights which was sufficient to acclimatise and see what there was to see in Fort Cochin

Really was looking forward to staying here - had booked multiple rooms and prepaid 180,000 inr. But then I emailed the hotel a few days before the stay (this was for Christmas 2016) and they said they didn't have my booking. They said the price was now ~2x what we had already paid and had confirmations for. So my guess is that the hotel saw they were able to get more due to being pretty full and canceled our stay as it was at the cheapest rate. The hotel says that they never received our booking. This is completely untrue. As soon as we booked, the rooms were taken out of the hotel's inventory, indicating that the reservation did go through. Each room here is individually named and individually booked, so it was easy to tell that the rooms we were booking were reserved for us, at least at the time of the booking. The hotel customer service was completely unhelpful and now borderline threatening with TripAdvisor reviews. I would have loved to have stayed here at the time - that's why we spent 180,000 inr after all (which was refunded) - but now there's no way I'm going to stay here given how they treated me and my family. It was simple to resolve our issue (honor the booking) but the hotel chose to fight. I know what the hotel will respond with - and it's telling of their confrontational attitude. They will not apologize for anything and will attempt to shift responsibility to anyone but themselves. Why not just try to make things right at the time, is that too hard? Apparently it is for this hotel and their management company. There are lots of other nice places in the area that have very good customer service that I will stay at and recommend instead.

I found out about Le Colonial several months ago when I was planning a trip to India for myself and my girlfriend - the first India visit for both of us. I knew right away that I wanted for us to spend our last couple of nights in India at Le Colonial, so I had high expectations even before getting there. I had booked the Viceroy room, and was very much looking forward both to staying in this very special room and to the general experience of Le Colonial itself. From the moment we pulled up in front of the gate and Smita, the manager, came out with her staff to wish us welcome, until the early morning when we unfortunately had to leave this very special place we had the most wonderful experience. Smita, who is the ultimate when it comes to combining the professional aspects of her duties with her very own very friendly and outgoing personality, was always there when we needed to ask a simple question, or sometimes just to engage in an interesting conversation. Our stay at Le Colonial would have been wonderful, no matter what, but Smita certainly added a whole different dimension to our enjoyment. It also so happened that we were the only guests during our brief two night stay, and having the dining room all to ourselves was another unique experience. And to say that the food was outstanding would of course be an understatement. We have stayed in many great hotels all over the world over the years but Le Colonial is in a whole different category - this is truly an experience and a memory for life. We will always remember our brief time there with fondness, and hope to return! Thank you so very much - Smita and staff!

I booked here for my husband and I after returning from a stressful summer holiday. We managed to go for a week during Eid, and I am so happy we made this decision. From the moment we stepped through the gates, we were welcomed by Smita and the staff. They were all friendly and a nice refreshing drink was offered. As the occupancy was quiet at the time, they surprisingly upgraded our room, and it was amazing! The whole house was very traditional, well worth the name Le Colonial. In fact my husband half expected a Michael Caine, think Zulu, to walk down the stairs! The decor and furniture is in keeping with this feel which adds to the warmth. The food was exceptional, nothing was too much for the kitchen staff and chef. I felt like a princess being looked after in this little hidden away gem. The location is perfect for walking around and seeing the fishing nets, also the local markets. The shops are enchanting and you are of course harassed by the many rickshaw drivers once you step out of the gates, but this is standard across visiting India, and other Asian countries. It does add to the experience, and they do leave you alone after so many "no's". There are also lots of art gallery's nearby which are interesting to look at. We used the pool facilities and relaxed on the veranda, where the staff were always on hand to offer us refreshments etc.. We were able to read our books in peace and quiet or just chat to other guests, which was an inviting experience in itself. The room price includes breakfast and or lunch/dinner, which is extremely reasonable. and the breakfast was so scrumptious, always starting with a plate of fruit and then anything thereafter. We stayed for 5 days with an overnight stay on a boat trip down the backwaters, and we both cannot wait to go back and stay again. It was truly the relaxing, friendly environment we needed given the hectic summer schedule we had. Not only did the hotel live up to the recommendation but the staff were every bit caring and attentive to our needs. Thank you Le Colonial!
