We loved Dewalokam! The family couldn't have been more welcoming and we thoroughly enjoyed our tour around the farm with Joseph - really interesting to see spices and veg growing in their natural habitat rather than in a shop!!! Lovely freshwater pool and relaxing hammocks by the river watching the kingfisher! The food was excellent and thoroughly enjoyed the cooking demos in the kitchen in the evenings with the fabulous chef! Had a very interesting tour around the rubber plantation and the local village with Prince and I had two cotton dresses made to my specification by two lovely ladies in the village for 500 rupees each! Would definitely recommend including a visit whilst in Kerala!

My husband and I had no idea where we were headed when we pulled into the farm. Everyone was there to meet us, the whole staff and family. There were beautiful flowers, no trash on the roads, turkeys walking around. It was a happy place. The owner had inherited the farm and you could tell he put his heart and soul into making it a success. His wife was so charming, I really enjoyed hearing about her life and work. They also had two children that were engaging with the guests and were a delight to meet a real South Indian family. Their daughter was in College and you could tell that she had a bright future in this very chauvinistic country. Their son was cute, enjoyed soccer, and he too would have a bright future ahead of him. The farm was situated on the river. They grew so many varieties of herbs and plants and the garden tour was amazing! The homegrown food was delicious and their Chef was a real treat. We enjoyed his cooking classes and heard he had been a local tv celebrity chef. The rest of the staff were very, very nice! We decided to get an Aurvedic massage, which was quite interesting and I laughed the entire time!!!! My husband enjoyed Yoga every morning while I slept in and spent my free time by the pool. I definitely felt relaxed, enjoyed the food and family! I would recommend this place to anyone wanting to get away from it all, no tv, no people staring at their phones all day! Rumor has it, Sir Paul stayed there a few years back. I can certainly see why! Thank you for such a memorable trip.... come visit us in the states! Jennifer and Kenny

Having left our five star hotel in Fort Cochin, we were preparing ourselves for something much more basic at Dewalokam. We had no idea of the surprise awaiting us! The first thing we noticed about this place was the absolute beauty and tranquility here. The property is set in green, lush farmland with a river running at the bottom and a gorgeous freshwater swimming pool. The rooms are immaculately clean and although they are basic, they are large and equipped with absolutely everything you could possibly need. We arrived to a traditional welcome with beautiful Jasmin garlands and flowers. The owner of the property, Jose welcomed us and we were shown to our room and then invited to join other guests for lunch. After enjoying the food which was far more delicious and plentiful than expected, we were introduced to the lovely Tara, Jose and Sitas daughter. She was to take us on our spice walk around the grounds. Having grown up in this beautiful place she was incredibly knowledgeable about all the fruits, vegetables and spices. She also took us to see the cows, water buffalo, chickens, turkeys and goats; all of which help this place to be almost totally self sufficient and add to its immense charm. At dinner that evening we met Sita, Joses wife and also their son, Paul. What a truly delightful family! Breakfast lunch and dinner are taken with other guests and the food was not only plentiful but delicious. Fresh buffalo milk, organic fruit and vegetables are all used by the fabulous chef to prepare delicious dishes. We would strongly advise anyone to take advantage of the cooking demonstrations, which happen every evening at 6. We were fortunate enough to take part in an early morning yoga class by the river, which set us up nicely for the day to follow. We thoroughly enjoyed our walk with Prince, our guide through the rubber plantations to the local village. We took the local bus part of the way back and a tuk tuk the rest of the way back to the paradise that is Dewalokam. We decided to take full advantage of the Ayurvedic massages on offer and Jose was happy to arrange this for us in the afternoon. So we whiled away the time swimming in the lake and chilling out by the pool. Hammocks are plentiful and are dotted around the property. It is truly peaceful and relaxing here. Tara sweetly offered me my first Henna tattoo and I could not believe what a fantastic job she did! This place is beyond compare. I just wish we had stayed more than two nights. To the reviewer who has found something better - good luck to you. I cannot imagine that anywhere could have been better than this!

About two weeks ago I was visiting Dewalokam Farmsaty Retreat to check the possibility of spending a few days there, and also to see if I can recommend it to my friends abroad. I was driving the car, and I had a foreigner (my wife) sitting on the front side passenger seat. The employee who met us first, probably did not see the person on the passenger seat, came to driver's side door and said, " we only take foreigners here". He remained there for about 30 seconds, and I felt he was almost blocking me from opening the door. Then he saw the foreigner on the other side, and moved away. After we got out of the car the lady of the house came and guided us to a table just in front of the dining room, and explained to us things we wanted to know, and also treated us with lemon juice. It was very helpful since the journey to reach there from Thodupuzha town was much more complicated and lonely than we ever imagined. The lady took us around and showed us the facility and the services provided there. It has good clean rooms and activity areas. The outside, I felt, was not even half of what they said it was on their web site. The organic garden they said was something like the backyard vegetable garden of an average family who want to grow there vegetables. We both felt the room charge per night (Rs.12000), as per the lady told us, was way too high for that place, in that location, and for what they provide. After the visit, we both felt something strange about the Dewalokam. The building is just a Western style one, and we did not feel any Kerala cultural ambiance in the premises. I felt, their dislike for Indians going there, was very strong. We decide to check other places similar to that. We found many places, much better, for about one third of what Dewalokam charges. We decided to put up our foreign guests at a different place, which is built according to a very traditional architecture, and which provided free breakfast and very good vegetarian food, very good services like cultural introduction with classical art performances, yoga, in-house Ayurveda massages, and treatments by Ayurveda doctors for those who need, visits to a Hindu temple with more than 1000 years of history just five minutes walk, a large size open air indoor swimming pool, arrangements of trips to places of interests, and so on. All these for about one third of the charge. I would not recommend Dewalokam Farm Stay to Indians, and to those who want to know a little more about the culture and tradition of Kerala. It is a good place to go and rest. As I felt, once you are inside there, there is no way out, unless you or they call a taxi.

We stayed here for 3 nights on our recent trip to Kerala. Whilst it is described as a homestay, the quality for exceeds that of many 5 star hotels. Your hosts Jose and Sinta greet you with a warmth normally associated with friends. The rest of the staff are equally delightful and nothing seems too much to ask. The rooms are extremely comfortable. The food is superb with an excellent variety of local Keralan dishes for both lunch and dinner. They are well versed in catering for all allergies including gluten intolerance. Afternoon tea is also served when there is a chance to chat with your hosts as well as their children, Tara and Paul when they are around. Various activities can be arranged including a tour of their farm, a visit to the local village, a cooking demonstration or you can just enjoy the serenity of their grounds by the pool or river. All in all this is an outstanding property which is a must visit if in Kerala. Thank you for a wonderful few days.
