Visited Hilly Side Estate with my family recently and it was one of the best homestays that I have stayed in recent times. The 2 bedroom main house was ours and the upkeep is also really nice. The river flowing close by is an added attraction and the food was excellent. The caretaker is not pro-active but does not get into your privacy at all. The living room is well equipped with a carrom board, cards and the kitchen is also equipped. We also managed to find firewood with the help of the caretaker and put up a campfire in the evening. A good choice if you love old-rustic type houses and farms.

Location is about a km from the tarmac road, via mud road which is motorable. This is a fantastic place - river Haringe is just couple of minutes by walk, you can see it from the property. Caretaker is very cooperative, and lives in his house about 100m away. Property is a typical old house and upkeep is good. If you want to experience a typical farm house then this is the place. What it is: Typical farm house, amidst nature, almost foresty area, no immediate neighbors, lot of birding opportunities. Has two clean bedrooms with attached clean toilets - hot water is made with fire wood (caretaker will do it, or if you like you can give it a shot too!). Though firewood heated, hot water is delivered through the plumbing to a hot water tap in both bathrooms (although a little slow), so need adequate time to prepare; There is a kitchen with refrigerator and basic amenities, living room with carom, cards, TV and adequate comfortable furniture. Campfire place outside. Has good cell phone coverage for BSNL and Airtel - not sure about other operators. What it is not: Not a luxurious place with plush rooms and modern toilet with high pressure shower and 24x7 hot water. Summary: If you are looking at luxury, you may not like it. If you want a typical rural farm setting that is clean and well kept, then you'll love it.

We had a terrible experience in this home stay. The rooms, linen everything was dirty, rooms were damp and smelly as if didn't get cleaned since a long time.Bedroom false ceiling had a hole in it , looked like rat can jump out of it anytime. There was only one caretaker and he too didn't show much hospitability. Food quantity and taste was also not good. Overall a very bad experience.

We were 7 of us, youngsters, who booked the cottage for a day. The experience was so great that we decided to extend it to 2 days!! To our luck, the rooms were available. Hillyside estate is beautiful. Food is excellent - We had some yummy Rice balls & Aloo curry for breakfast one morning. The river side is just a 2-3 minute walk. Early mornings are the best here. So calm and pleasant! :) Even though its been a week after we left Coorg, we are still not over the experience we had at Hillyside :) Definitely making another visit.

We had been here with my parents and kid. We had booked two rooms and the booking was done 4 days earlier. The house looks old and is not maintained properly. Walls have long cracks, floor is dusted and does not seem like the caretaker Joyappa is bothered about it. There are torn portraits on the wall and some broken show pieces are kept which gives a feeling of bhoot bangla... In the night some animal (may be rat or mice) runs over the bedroom roofs and the sound will be so dense, that we were scared of when something will jump from the roof. We had to spend sleepless nights.. :( Bathrooms are clean but basic tap facilities are not as needed.. It is understood that they will have difficulty in arranging food as they have to travel 15kms to get things. But even if you give the order in the morning for that days dinner, they will cook very less quantity of the food. And there is no special dishes cooked, its just the rice, some tasteless dal, some kind of veg sambar with one salad. And they charge too much for one meals. Its totally waste to spend so much and have sleepless nights. There is nothing available as indoor games except carrom board. No interesting trekking places nearby too. The owner Thammanna spoke very professionally until we made advance payment and booking. After that for everything he directed to Joyappa the caretaker, was just not bothered about the basic facilities and information as well. Please find something better places. I will not suggest this place to anyone.
