Good stay (Bird watching trip)
by MaithiliSave on
It is around 2 hours from Hubballi Airport (neatest one) and 2 hours from Dharwad. It is very basic Government Resort. Cottages are nice and clean. No online booking available. You have to demand draft to their office at Dandeli. Their food was very simple .. home made taste. It is really nice if you are visiting for sole purpose of birding. Inside the resort, you can spot various birds. There is a Timber Depot at 10 mins walking distance where you can do bird watching. We did not do Safari in the Tiger reserve. We were told that tiger / black panther sighting is extremely rare. Overall we enjoyed our stay and the bird watching trip.

We spent a night here and there was nothing that stood out - the location, rooms, service. Rooms are very basic and not very clean, the food was average and the maintenance of the entire property is shoddy. The only saving grace was the sheer numbers of birds in and around the property, and the Malabar hornbills that we spotted at a short distance.
Great experience to stay inside forest at comparitively low price. Real jungle experience!

The camp is 11 kilometres from Dandeli - the nearest town. Online booking for accommodation: Booking can done online for both tents as well as log huts - the two camps are separate but next to each other. Some old reviews mention about the need to get SBI draft. However that has changed now and one can pay by credit card and other modes for online booking. While online booking, register yourself instead of checking out as 'guest'. In the latter case, you can get only payment receipt without other booking details. You might like to call the number given in payment receipt in advance to confirm about the booking. Not required but for your own peace of mind. Parking: There are two parking lots - one at the entry point for the tent camp and another next to the interpretation/reception centre (for log huts). Either can be used - ample space. Costs Rs. 100. Log huts: Basic but comfortable - fan, attached western style toilet, comfortable bed, towels... It is as clean as a log hut in a jungle can get. And there is an electric boiler attached to each hut for hot water. We did not face any mosquito problem. There was power outage in the afternoon when we reached but none during the night - so can sleep comfortably. And in any case weather is good due to greenery. Felt very safe despite being in the midst of a forest. Log Hut costs Rs. 1,500 + 12% GST. Food: One of the staff members cooks food. Advisable to place the order for dinner when you reach the camp. It is buffet system for veg meals. But for non-veg, one has to specify the requirement in advance since the cook has to go to Dandeli to get specific ingredients. Fairly decent quality and cheap. It is served in a common round structure. While having dinner, one can place order for the breakfast the next day. Options for both dinner and breakfast are limited. But then it is a huge relief that one gets it on a platter without driving down to Dandeli in darkness. So we were thankful for the service. The cost for two Veg dinners and two breakfasts was Rs. 330 - they could have asked for double that amount and we still would have been thankful in that kind of location. Safari: The Safari entry is NOT adjacent to the camp. It is 3 kilometers from the camp - so have to have a vehicle to reach the safari gate (in other words a vehicle cannot drop for check-in and then pick up at the time of check-out). Do not expect an African game watching experience. Chances of sighting a tiger/black panther are next to nil. Not even a bison. Expect to see dear, fox, giant Malabar squirrel, peacocks, lots of birds including hornbills. The charges are Rs. 450 per person. Each jeep takes 7 to 8 persons. So if your group is smaller, either you share the jeep with others (allocation done by safari officials) or pay extra to compensate for the less number. There is a lot to see in the camp itself close to the log huts. We could see noisy (but cute) hornbills close to the hut. And a python at some distance. There is guide available for nature walk for bird lovers - it is a paradise for bird watching.
Beautiful Stay in the lap of the Nature

The camp is the midst of the dense forest. The camp has two parts one with all log huts and other with camps. We were 17 people we stayed at log huts the rooms are pretty well made with only woods and part concrete. Each log hut has a cute balcony and one can have lovely tea there. Sometimes spider may creep through. Now important points 1. The parking is near interpretation centre/reception, the distance from that to camp or log house is 500mts min. Hence never carry any heavy luggage. 2. The government has allocated two cooks with its supplies to serve either sides. For us it was a great problem with kids and 67 year old mother as the log hut side cook went for vacation and camp side cook will not serve food to log hut side hence for breakfast, lunch and dinner we have to walk around 600 mts every day and night was a bit scary as we have to pass through the jungle. Large Toch is must. 3. They have Kali Tiger Reserve Safari and Birdwatching and Dandeli Timber Trail is just 15 km drive lovely part to that and there is a junction where one can go and buy essentials. The safari is 450 pp no camera charges, the forest is excellent but conservation status is extremely poor. 4. Birders heaven name one species you get it there from Owls, Eagles, Woodpeckers, Nutchats, minivets, Hornbills all in the camp Nov-Dec is the best time to go. 5. At night it was very cold we had to switch off the fans, No room service remember no intercom and no mobile network even BSNL was not working there. 6. BE ALERT!!! they say they have wired perimeter but Leopard and Tiger lurk the place very near and in certain areas the perimeter wires were broken. Spiders are often seen in the bathroom. Overall fantastic budget wildlife tour, around 500 kms from Bengaluru take left from Delhi Durbar Resturant through the villages or miss the turn like us and follow google through Anshi Tiger Reserve wow what a road. The government should maintain these places with more professionalism as Indian tourists are now more attracted to these jungles etc.
nice forest stay. Very close to nature

Beautiful. In the heart of dandeli Jungle. Food is good. staff is also very cooperative. It is very near to Jungle Safari. You can see many birds. Have tent and hut accommodation. If you are with family, book log hut than tent. Best place to stay in Dandeli.

Cottage is great for small families. We took a look at the Tents which are awesome too, more suitable for a single large group.
