When I was headed over to Vidya Niwas, I didn't know what to expect... I had never ever stayed in the mountains and I knew much less about the culture, than I thought. As I entered my room and started unpacking and generally 'de-stressing' though, I realised that this house was less like a hotel and more like a home... the hosts, Arvind & Sangeeta Gurung are the most quirky and lively people to be around! The long conversations over simmering cups of tea and breakfast were my favorite part of my stay here! I had absolutely no itinerary planned out for my month-long stay but with the help of the hosts, I managed to make this mountain adventure, all worthwhile. My tailor-made itinerary meant that I was packing in just enough activity as I wanted. The rest of my free time was spent taking walks on their terrace with the mountains behind me. The food here was superb - no doubt about it! And so was the hospitality, whenever I needed something all I had to do was ask the Gurungs and they would go out of their way to make things right for me. To anyone, who doesn't want a glitzy & artificial hotel experience in Dharamshala, this is a wonderful quaint place, that is perfect for that economical long-stay that you are planning. Because after all, travel is more about experiencing other cultures, other ways of life and thanks to the Gurungs, I know what a Happy Home in the mountains looks like!

I stayed at Vidya Niwas for almost a month throughout April 2015. I must say that I enjoyed every minute of my stay at this beautiful place. With water flowing within earshot and snow-clad mountains peeking in my room from the door, it was exactly the kind of place an urban person would love to stay at. This place has a lot of warm and positive energy with lovely hosts and pets. The tea will be served hot even before you would ask for it! The place is secluded if you like solitude and only a short trip away from Mcloed if you like crowd. My host was a lovely and generous old couple who not only arranged a trek and a few other excursions for me, but also made me feel like a part of their family throughout my stay. I stayed in Dharamsala for 2 nights more than the original plan and the hosts extended my stay in the same room without charging any extra tariff... All in all, Vidya Niwas is an experience in itself, perfect example of why Himachalis are known for their hospitality! Thumbs up if you are planning a long stay here...

If you are looking for a cottage based ambiance with delicious home cooked food and clean air, Vidya Niwas is the place to be! I'm a student and I was extremely happy to note that the hostess planned my entire vacation within a budget that I could afford. This is definitely not a luxury you'll find at commercial resorts but Vidya Niwas was like a home in the mountains. Being from the plains, the environment was fresh and absolutely breathtaking. The room was classic, a wonderful representation of the local heritage and culture while every bit of it was spacious. Despite leaving it always in a mess, Sangeeta (our hostess) always ensured it would be restored to its original neat and clean condition. If you are an animal lover, you will fall in love with their adopted dogs who are adorable. Every meal I ate at Vidya Niwas was cooked to perfection. I was served my meals at comfortable timings and couldn't enjoy the lovely broth and meat that my hostess cooked with flavors so enriching. It was a comfortable stay overall especially since I was picked up from the airport in a spacious car despite the fact that I was a single traveler. The conversations I got to experience over a warm cup of tea (without calling for one in fact!) made me feel like home. I enjoyed my volunteering in Dharamshala which was organized under Sangeeta and Arvind and got to learn so much from just a week's stay in the hills. If you are a real traveler without any kind of non-probable fuss, this is the ideal place to be in its natural setting.

Staying at Vidya Niwas felt more like staying at home away from home. We stayed in Kotha Basant which was a homely room decorated in traditional Kangra style with modern bathroom and free wifi given to us. Waking up to beautiful sunshine as the room faces east and wandering out into the balcony, you are immersed in the lap of Mother nature and the stunning view of the Dhauladhar Mountain Ranges. The terrace has a lot of walking space available and also since I do Yoga and Surya Namaskar, it was the perfect environment for fresh space, fresh ideas and a fresh universe, since I am from the city. The hosts, Arvind and Sangeeta were gracious and have an enormous knowledge of Dharamsala and Himachal for those willing to sit and spend time talking to them. They gave us beautiful insights into the local culture of the place and send us on many interesting explorations. Me and my wife went on a half day hike to Indrunag temple but through the aromatic tea gardens which made our trip memorable. They also organized for us to go to Bir and experience the wondrous Paragliding. I would like to make a special mention about Sangeeta's cooking since the flavors take you all over the world and into paradise. I'm sure I'll cherish these memories for a long long time and would definitely like to come back. P.S: I would highly recommend this place to people who travel with an open mind and would actually like to explore the real Dharamsala rather than the usual commericially based sightseeing programs and typical hotel experiences.

I couldn't get myself to spend one night here as it was FILTHY. Not only that, we ended up leaving in the middle of the night cause there was a black widow in our room. The rooms look nothing like the pictures, they are small, hot, humid and with no space for you to unpack your bag. I ended up with diarrhoea because the food was dirty, there was no wifi in the room as promised and the "hostess" ended up yelling at us and refunding NOTHING of our 80% payment for 12 nights when we decided to leave within a few hours of being in her filthy space. They don't list their prices on their website because they make up prices based on where you're from and what you do. We ended up paying the same rate to stay at a 4* luxury hotel! The car that came to pick us up from the airport was so small that the trunk was left open with a risk of our stuff stumbling downhill. The location was bad, nothing nearby and not high enough to enjoy the beauty of dharamsala. If you like filthy rooms, eating filthy food, being used and yelled at then this is the place for you. Otherwise, pick ANY place else.
