Dooars has derived its name from the term dooar in Bengali or duar in Nepali, both meaning door, as the region forms a gateway to Bhutan. Sited in Northeast India, these floodplains and foothills of the eastern Himalayas are constituted by two subsections, namely the Western Dooars or the Bengal Dooars and the Eastern Dooars or the Assam Dooars. Stretching from River Teesta on the west to River Sankosh on the east, these divisions collectively cover an area of 8,800 sq. km. A trip to Dooars brings travellers in an idealistic setting to explore the best of northeastern districts.
There are myriad of awe-inspiring locations in and around Dooars, which invite thousands of tourists to the region every year. Popular places to visit in Dooars comprise the Chilapata Forest, Buxa Fort, tea gardens of Birpara, Jaldhaka River and Cooch Behar district. A visit to the Bindu Valley, marking the foothills of Kalimpong on the Indo-Bhutan border, is a refreshing experience. Other major locations near Dooars that are worth a visit include Totopara, Chalsa, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Malbazar, Samsing, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Kalijhora and Barodabri, to name a few.
Blessed by Mother Nature with dense jungles, Dooars is noted for its many wildlife sanctuaries and national parks that abound in a fascinating diversity of flora and fauna. Not to be missed during a Dooars tour is the Buxa Tiger Reserve that stands out for its population of elephants, leopards, deer and other reptile and bird species. Gorumara National Park and Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary are just as popular for their natural population of the one-horned Rhinoceros. Besides wildlife exploration and sightseeing, Dooars offers plenty of opportunities for trekking and nature walks.
