Thattekad Birds Song Homestay is just inside the Salim Ali, Bird Sanctuary, Thattekad which was set up by Dr Salim Ali who is widely regarded as the father of Indian Ornithology. The sight was chosen because the diverse habitats in the area have resulted in outstanding avian diversity. We stayed here for three nights and enjoyed warm, friendly hospitality from our hosts Vinod and Sini. During our two full days we experienced three, guided bird watching walks with the outstanding Vinod. His knowledge of Indian birds and his ability to spot them amongst the forest trees was bewildering not to mention his patience with relative novices. Siri was gentle and caring and provided us with a range of simple, tasty Kerala meals. Thank you both for an outstanding time at Thattekad Birds Song Homestay.

An unassuming small Homestay, what could be more perfect in such a location . Clean , comfortable and deliciously simple menu. We rated Vinod as a very experienced birding guide with a most amazing naked eye !

Stayed in the new room built in Vinod's Birds Song Homestay. There are four rooms in this new building. Veranda offers a good view of birds flying. One thing missing in this new building is the AC, whereas the old rooms above his house has AC and has a good view of the adjacent lake. Rooms were clean, and with all basic amenities. There can be a separate dining hall instead of setting the table and chair in front of the room. Food is mostly Kerala vegetarian cuisine and is basic except for a boiled egg curry during breakfast. Price quoted is inclusive of all three meals and tea/coffee during dawn and dusk, and found to be slightly on the higher side considering the non-AC rooms and vegetarian affair. Vinods several years of experience in birding plays a big role while you go for trekking. He takes you to the most happening place and makes sure your time is well spent by showing the endemic birds to the region. No other facilities for kids or adults while in the homestay, except the trekking which Vinod arranges during morning and evening. People who are not very keen about birds and nature may not find this place attractive.

Located at the lap of Thattekad jungle this homestay has no match. In my experience Vinod Narayanan is one of the best naturalists I have ever worked with. He is disciplined. He does his homework. He plans. He is extremely hardworking. He shares his knowledge more than generously. His eyes and ears are God gifted. He picks up faintest of the calls, and slightest of the signs. He reads jungle lore as a book. He is ethical (no feeding of birds to lure them). One cannot ask more than that from a naturalist. Over three days we followed him from early morning to mid evening visiting multiple sanctuaries, reserve forests, and wood patches - in search of our species list. We covered more than 90% along with many bonus. We spotted and photographed flame-throated bulbul, grey-headed bulbul, yellow-browed bulbul, malabar grey hornbill, white-bellied treepie, malabar parakeet, malabar woodshrike, white-bellied woodpecker, heart-spotted woodpecker, lotions sunbird, nilgiri flowerpecker, malabar trogon, indian pitta, red spurfowl, jerdons nightjar, great-eared nightjar, ceylon frogmouth, oriental dwarf kingfisher, black baza, brown wood owl, indian scops owl, slender loris, palm civet cat, malabar pit viper, forest green lizard and many more species. His energy and commitment is infectious. His patience to get a species is commendable. (We tried jerdons nightjar over two days at four different spots - we lost hope and patience - he did not.) He sees these birds and animals everyday, yet his excitement in spotting them once more is unmistakable. He understands wildlife photography deeply and tries his best to get you right angle, light and place to photograph the species. We experienced his skill at night safari once more. At pitch black darkness the way he spotted animals, birds, and snakes is unbelievable. He knows every animals behaviour and movement. For example, he asked me to pickup a medium power headlamp from Decathlon since his high-power spotlight was making the slender loris to turn back - and that hypothesis worked perfectly inside jungle. Similarly, from white-bellied treepie call he spotted black baza. And Despite presence of leopards and venomous snakes, we never felt scared with his reassuring presence in the jungle. I shall be neglectful if I do not mention Mrs. Srini Narayanan. This ever smiling lady ensures that your stay is comfortable, your food is tasty, and your rooms are clean. Despite having high number of guests she never forgot our preferences, and timings. Every time we requested, she served us tea - and that is many time a day. The food is really special! Over three days we tasted chicken, pork and a tuna like sea fish along with several vegetarian dishes made of pineapple, local bulbs, red rice and so on. All are yummy! The homestay is at the lap of jungle. Rooms are basic, but clean. And charges are very very nominal. Truly amazing experience! Thank you Srini and Vinod. You really made our trip heavenly.

I was thinking of visiting a good birding place. I asked some naturalists in our group and they suggested to visit Thattekkad, kerala. They also recommended Mr.Vinod Narayan as a guide.I talked to Vinod on phone and booked the room. One of our group members was with me.We sent him the wish list of birds we intended to see and photograph. While going I was skeptical if we could see those exotic birds within two and half days. We had 6 birding sessions including 2 night sessions with Vinod and we saw and photographed almost all the birds we intended to see. We missed only 3/4 species! Thus we could achieve 95% of our target. The birds seen by us included Black baza, Malabar Trogon, Sri Lanka frogmouth, Owls,Malabar whistling thrush,Crested serpent eagle, Crested goshawk. In all we saw 100 plus species. All credit goes to Vinod who is a dedicated expert. He knows the jungle well and took all efforts to spot the birds for us. He is very punctual.Tea was given at sharp 6:15 and we used to start the trail at 6:30am sharp. He plans the trails depending on whether the group consists of hardcore birders or amateurs About Birds song homestay facility- Food and accommodation was equally good. Food is prepared by Vinod's family members which consisted of delicious kerala dishes. Apart from earlier 2 suits there are 4 newly constructed rooms, each having comfortable beds, plush interior, and attached toilet/bathroom with 24 hours hot water supply. Overall it was a very pleasant, memorable tour. Thattekkad is a must visit place for hardcore birders and I strongly recommend Mr.Vinod Narayan as a guide.
