Vinod is very knowledgeable about birds, flora, fauna and Sini is an excellent cook. The accommodation is basic but comfortable and clean with hot water recently added, AC and WIFI. The area is beautiful (apart from the rubbish everywhere by the roads as normal in India). We would definitely recommend and would like to return for a longer stay. We learned such a lot about birds.

My girlfriend and I had a lovely couple of days staying at Vinod and Sini's place at Thattekad. The room was very comfortable and clean and had excellent a/c. More importantly, Vinod and Sini were very welcoming and friendly hosts. If there was a disappointment, it was that the bird sanctuary was not open at the time of our visit, but Vinod drove us to another forest spot 10 miles away, where he was able to point out such beautiful species as the malabar trogon, golden oriole and ceylon frogmouth (ok perhaps not beautiful, but rare!). There were also plenty of interesting species flying around the accommodation which he was quick to point out. Sini's cooking was really delicious and certainly plentiful, her ginger curry was a particular highlight! Highly recommended for anyone visiting northern Kerala

I am an avid birdwatcher and Thattekad was always in my list of priorities. My friend and I finally made it there and stayed in Birds song Homestay from 23rd March to 25th March, 2018. The weather was getting hot but it was not much of a problem. Currently there are two air conditioned rooms in the first floor for guests to stay while Vinod and his wife Sini, our hosts, live downstairs. The location is superb. On entering the sanctuary, it is less than 5 minutes walk to the homestay. There is ample open space around. Sitting on the first floor veranda, just outside the rooms, you become one with nature. There is so much to watch and listen to. We saw the Malabar grey hornbill, flame throated bulbuls, black headed orioles, Malabar squirrels, black-rumped flameback woodpecker, magpie robin, sunbirds and butterflies hovering around their food plants, just to name a few. You can listen to the bird calls coming from a distance as well such as that of white cheeked barbets, hawk cuckoo and more. We heard the call of a nightjar in the evening. There are quite a few birding trails that one can take around the homestay. We did that in the evening. The next day, early in the morning we drove to Urulanthanny forest area. It is a lovely forest teeming with abundant life forms. Here we saw the white-headed starling, Malabar barbet, Malabar parakeet, vernal hanging parrot, Asian fairy bluebird, Loten's sunbird and many more. We were keen on spotting the Malabar Trogan and the Ceylon Frogmouth. That is when Vinod's sighting skills came to the fore. For an hour we followed him through several trails into the forest. And then it happened. First time we saw a female Ceylon frogmouth. This was followed by the sighting of a couple of Malabar Trogons. Mission accomplished. In the evening we went boating in the adjoining river. We thought it will be a tame affair but to our surprise we spotted a black Baza and a number of blue tailed bee eaters. We also saw a snake swim across from one shore to the other. Our stay was comfortable. The rooms were clean and neat. No frills but adequate. Sini, Vinod's wife, prepared simple delicious home - cooked food that perfectly suited my palette. No oily, greasy stuff. I specially loved the cool fresh lime juice each time we returned from a birding trip. I have no hesitation in recommending this homestay at Thattekad for a great birding experience.

We spent 3 nights at Birdsong and had a wonderful time with Vinod and Sini. We did 3 birding sessions, 2 in the morning and only 1 evening as it was not really worth going out in the evening due to the heat. We tagged along for an afternoon session with an Indian family who wanted to see Frogmouths and a rare migratory owl. We photographed both and glimpsed a Malabar Trogon. The family happily ticked off their wish list. One morning session was very fruitful with several woodpeckers which we do not have at home. Vinod is a very patient and skilled bird spotter and we were very pleased with what we saw. The weather is now a little hot for really good birding. Sini is a master in the kitchen. Everything was freshly made and exceptionally delicious. The banana curry and pineapple curry and the dahl with ginger were standouts. The rooms are simple but perfectly comfortable. The newly erected birdhide works a treat. We had a wide variety of birds at the birdbaths including a woodpecker and yellow bulbuls. Highly recommended.
