Gangotri is a small town located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. The presence of the Gangotri glacier, the source of the holy River Ganga makes Gangotri one of the most highly revered religious destinations among Hindus. This town is also a part of the four Char Dham pilgrimage areas. The Gangotri Temple is the most popular tourist attraction of this place. This shrine is dedicated to Hindu Goddess Ganga and is visited by a large number of devotees every year. To every traveller, Gangotri tour truly offers an unruffled ambience with its snowcapped Himalayas peaks and the pristine Bhagirathi River.
One of the most remarkable religious places in Gangotri is the Submerged Shivlingam. Tourists will be amazed to know that the Shivling is visible only during winters as it remains immersed under water during summers. It is also believed that Lord Shiva received the river Ganga on his matted locks in this pious site. Tourists can also visit the Bhagirathi Shila which is a mythical stone associated with folk stories. Gauri Kund and Surya Kund are other important places to visit during Gangotri trip. These are picturesque ponds formed by waterfalls.
Perched at an elevation of 3750 m above sea level, the town of Gangotri is famous as a trekking destination, thus making trekking a major part of Gangotri sightseeing. A lake called Vasuki Tal can also be reached by trekking from the town of Gangotri. Interested tourists can also trek to Nadanvan, Kedartal, and Pandav Gufa. Situated at 24 km from Gangotri, Nandavan Tapovan is a beautiful trek surrounded by meadows coupled with an unambiguous variety of flora and fauna.
