Interesting Hotel Mandakini

Firstly to get there, you had to enter via a restaurant, then go up these very windy red concrete stairs and you reached reception. From the separate reception room you went around the corner up the stairs down the hall to the end and there was our room. It was very minimal but we were so happy to see a bed. When we arrived all the power was out but they got thing back up and running before it got dark so want an issue. The room had a nice little balcony and a nice bathroom. The bathroom had both types of toilet, Indian and European but alas no shower. e got a bucket each of hot water to clean up before going down to attend the evening Arti at the Ganga temple. The Arti was lovely and much different to others I have seen. There were no more than 50 people in attendance, I guess with it being the last week of the season before the snows come, the road closes, and Ganga moves down the mountains to her winter home in another village.
Best is still Best

After the excellent experience last year, I wrote a review thinking that this place could not get any better, as it is easily the best in Gangotri. I was wrong, I am glad to admit. The itsy-bitsy kitchen has been shut down and food comes from the Krishna Palace Restaurant just below Mandakini Guest House. Railings have been added to the stair case. Plumbing and electricity services have improved. Chanderji seems to get so much done without a wrinkle ...he is always so relaxed that it is infectious. Come and stay here for a week or more. Most people rush up and down Gangotri, which is the worst way to experience the place. Mandakini Guest House is the place for a stay of more than three nights. Do not wait.

Excellent hotel...With new wing coming up..Try to take 1st floor room n see if u can get corner room...Views of bhagirathi river n gangotri temple amidst mighty mountain is amazing...It also have small balcony, which can be used during morning hrs for enjoying sun n reading book. Toilets etc are v clean...Hot water for bathing available on demand... Food is available in the hotel but 2 min is market which offers much better variety. But ensure to book in advance else it gets booked in advance (all rooms) by tracker groups specially foreign groups.
Excellent location & care

Sometimes, on journeys one experiences true service provided by strangers. At Mandakini, we experienced care, which went far beyond true service. Very close to the temple, Mandakini has rooms overlooking Bhagirathi and pine-decked mountains. We heard her all the time and could see her swell in a day. one of the paths to Gaumukh passes from the door of Mandakini which sees guests who are essentially walking to Gaumukh or further. The rooms have adequate space and tiny little balconies. But it is the window overlooking Bhagirathi which is the best place to be - it has enough space to serve as a table for two and eating the simple meals brought up there becomes a lifetime memory. Mandakini has a itsy-bitsy kitchen with four tables serviced by young boys sincerely at work. The ambience of care at Mandakini comes from Chanderji who pays personal attention to each guest, not just run Mandakini as best as he can. When at Gangotri, stay at Mandakini. Come as a stranger, leave as a guest, come back as a friend.
Top floor for best views. Ground floor to avoid stairs.
