Garhmukteshwar is a renowned town in the district of Panchsheel Nagar in Uttar Pradesh. Located at a distance of approximately 100-km from New Delhi, it is the nearest point from where the holy river 'Ganga' flows. Here, four temples are dedicated to Goddess Durga, of which two are located atop the hill and the other two at its foot. One of these temples is famous for 80 Sati Pillars, the spots where 80 Hindu widows performed Sati. Devotees believe that a trip to Garhmukteshwar and dip in the Ganga river will ward off their sins.
Every year, a large number of tourists plan a Garhmukteshwar tour in the Hindu month of 'Kartik' to participate in the Ganga Fair, which is organised on a full-moon day. During this auspicious time, approximately eight lakh people from all over the country and abroad visit this place to take a dip in the 'Ganga'. One of the many things to do in Garhmukteshwar include participating in the huge fair organised during the Dussehra festival.
The travellers can also visit a mosque built by Gyas-ud-din Balban. Here, they can see ancient Arabic inscriptions that date back to 1283 A.D or 682 Hijri as per the Islamic calendar. The Fort Unchagaon, located in the Unchagaon village, is also close to Garhmukteshwar. This magnificent fort was built in the 19th century and till now, several modern amenities have been added to its grandeur.
