Gaya is the second largest city of Bihar, located at a distance of 100 km from the south of Patna. The city lies on the banks of the river Falgu and is surrounded by small hills. Gaya is a highly revered place among Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. A Gaya tour gives an opportunity to see the ancient buildings and sacred places situated in different parts of the city. Devotees gather here in huge numbers from all over the country for Pitripaksha Mela to perform 'Pinda Daan'. The ritual is performed for the family members who have passed away. It is believed that this ritual bring peace to the souls.
Gaya tourist places include the Vishnupad Temple, Mangla Gauri Temple and Akshyavat. The Vishnupad Temple is 220 years old and is dedicated to Hindu deity Vishnu. It is a religious centre, which Hindus perform the 'Pinda Daan' ritual. Among other places to visit in Gaya, the Mangla Gauri Temple is one of the most prominent as this ancient temple dates back to the 15th century. Besides, Akshyavat is a legendary banyan tree, which according to folklore, is blessed by Hindu Goddess Sita. This is a unique tree which never sheds its leaves and remains evergreen, irrespective of the season.
While in Gaya, tourists can feast on the traditional Bihari food among which litti, pittha, sattu, bari-dal and baigan-bharta are the main dishes. They can also pamper their taste buds with popular sweets like tilkut, anarsa, khaja, balushahi and kesariya peda.
