Beautiful old buildings and cars. Once in a lifetime opportunity to see a society that is going to be changing. The people are friendly and streets walkable. Not a sit in the sun and eat visit. The crumbling buildings and lack of basic supplies explain the difference between capitalism and socialism

We visited Cuba by cruise ship with Havana being our only stop. First a few things to know about Cuba - US citizens must obtain a Cuban Visa to be allowed in the country. Our cruise line procured ours for us for a fee of $75. You also have to register with the US Office of Foreign Assets Control and provide a reason for the visit. OFAC post a list of hotels, restaurants, etc. in Cuba that as US citizens you are prohibited from having dealings with. Money - Cuban Exchanges charge 10% on top of other fees to exchange US Dollars to Cuban Pesos but not for Euros. Our bank does not charge a fee to change US for Euros so we did that before leaving. We did find however that several of the places we made purchases accepted US dollars. Cant say if there was an additional 10% charge at these places. Also, Cuba has what is called CUC Pesos for use by tourists that cannot be exchanged back when departing, plan wisely. All of that said, Havana was a very nice town to visit. We took a walking tour provided by the cruise line first thing to orient ourself to the area within walking distance of the cruise ship port, then spent the day and evening exploring on our own. Believe me you can do better on your own than booking tours through cruise lines or other online resources. We found plenty of local cuisine, drinks and other activists for much lower cost. We elected not to get involved in the evening life at the clubs downtown but talked to several others who did on their own at minimal expense. Us, we had an excellent adventure, enjoyed good food and drink, plus enjoyed a ride around a beautiful town in an old 1952 convertible. One day was plenty for us in Havana but looking to return to other sites.

My group took a 7 hour excursion, "Best of Havana." If you are interested in the history and present day info, this tour is great. You'll tour Hemingway's estate, visit an amazing cemetery, and see how the people live. Lunch was included. We dined at Salon Rojo. The entertainment was great, but the food was lousy. We were served a banquet style lunch, including beef (very tough), pork (not tasty) and chicken. They chicken was sliced like lunch meat It was very thin and dry. The Mojito was excelente! They take you to shop at an indoor market for 45 minutes, but that's not enough time to visit all the vendors. There's one other stop to shop. Its a government store where you can buy cigars, rum, and coffee. The entire bus load (just about) crams into the store, and it's smaller than the average living room. Not to mention, there's one cash register, and two clerks to help the crowd. You'll be shoulder to shoulder in this store.

I loved Havana. From the beautiful blue/green beaches, to the classic cars and cultures and I must say I loved the San Jose market...they have everything that you are looking for in there. I will say Cuba is HOT and there is no AC so bring sunscreen and a fan too!
