Gulmarg is a premier hill station in India, situated at an altitude of 2730 m in the Baramula district of Jammu and Kashmir. Literally meaning the 'Meadow of Roses', Gulmarg is characteristic of lush green backdrop, flowering gardens, beautiful landscapes, serene lakes and snowy mountains. The best way of Gulmarg sightseeing is Gondola, one of the world's highest cable car that offers breathtaking views of the picturesque surroundings along the Gulmarg-Kongdori-Apharwat route.
Besides the Gondola Lift, places to visit in Gulmarg include the Alpather Lake, a favourite picnic spot sited amid the scenic snow-capped terrains of Apharwat. There are a few religious attractions in and around Gulmarg as well, the most popular ones being Baba Reshi Shrine, Maharani Temple, St. Mary's Church, Haji Murad at Kreeri and Tangmarg. Khilanmarg is another interesting place near Gulmarg to enjoy the panoramic views of the Kashmir valley and the Himalayan range.
The imposing Himalayan peaks surrounding the village are covered with snow throughout the year; whilst making Gulmarg 'the heartland of winter sports in India' . A trip to Gulmarg is thus replete with winter sports, particularly skiing and snowboarding. Adventure seekers can also enjoy the thrilling experience of trekking, mountain biking and fishing. To visitors' surprise, the hill station has ample golfing opportunities with Gulmarg Golf Course, which is the highest of its kind in the world.
Once a favourite summer holiday destination for Britishers based in India, Gulmarg still holds its stature and is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the country. The peak season to visit this summer retreat commences with snowfall in December and lasts until March. Travellers can easily reach Gulmarg via road as it is just a couple of hours' away from the state's capital Srinagar.
