Hassan is a peaceful town located towards the south of Karnataka, just 4 hours' drive away from the state capital of Bangalore. The city is extremely popular among science enthusiasts as the Master Control Facility of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is stationed here. The temples in and around the city, which display great architectural finesse, serve as significant Hassan attractions and credit the town as the temple-architectural capital of Karnataka.
Hassanamba Temple is an 800 year old temple in Hassan, dedicated to Goddess Hassanamba, the deity who presides over the town and gives it its present name. Spread across a sprawling area, this temple is visited by tourists all year round; however, the inner sanctum is open for public viewing for just two weeks around the festival of Deepavali. Ramanathpur Temples, comprising five temples sited at a walking distance from each other, are also counted among well-known Hassan tourist places. Other prominent temples near Hassan that are worth a visit include Chennakesava Temple in Belur, Hoysalaeswara Temple in Halebid and twin Hoysala temples in Mosale.
The 450-year old Shettyhalli Church is another interesting site in Hassan that can be visited by tourists, but only during summer months as it remains submerged in Hemavathy River backwaters for the rest of the year. Among other popular places to visit in Hassan is the Gorur Dam, which is built across the Hemavathy River at a small distance from the city. Travellers can also undertake an excursion from Hassan to adjoining areas, such as Belur, Sravanabelagola and Halebid.
