Hospet is a city located in the Bellary district of Karnataka on the banks of the Tungabhadra River. It is very close to Hampi which has the ruins of Vijayanagar and is a World Heritage site. It is located at an approximate distance of 325 km from state capital Bangalore. The city was constructed by Krishna Deva Raya, a ruler of Vijayanagar and was initially named Nagalambika. However, natives called this city by the name Hose Pete, meaning 'New City' and this is how the name 'Hospet' came into being. Numerous travellers from India and abroad visit the place to witness various Hospet tourist places.
There are several interesting places to visit in Hospet which include forts, temples and other monuments. Among prominent places of attraction in and around the city, the Tungabhadra Dam is extremely significant. The massive structure provides magnificent landscapes to thousands of tourists visiting this place yearly. Gardens in the vicinity of the dam add to the beauty of the location. There are also few historical monuments in the city, the most important being Chitradurga Fort which is at a small distance from the city of Hospet. The fort was built in different stages between 10th and 18th centuries and covers a vast expanse of land.
The Vithala, Raghunath and Virupaksha temples in the region are famous for their carvings and architecture. Other locations tourists will find interesting are Queen's Bath, King's Balance, Lotus Mahal and Royal Residence. There is also a museum and art gallery located in Kamalapuram which displays exquisite artefacts and sculptures dating back to the time of the Vijayanagar Empire.
Among numerous other things to do, Hospet sightseeing is the best way to learn about the cultural and historical significance of the place. Tourists visiting Hospet must also visit Hampi to explore various facts about an ancient city.
