While Kerala is known as 'God's Own Country', Idukki is rightly addressed as 'God's Own District'. It comprises four sub-districts, namely Devikulam, Udumbanchola, Peermede and Thodupuzha which play a significant role in promoting Idukki Tourism. Idukki is exuberant with lush green mountains, tea plantations and dense forests. Spending vacations in Idukki is one of the best ways to calm mind and body, which is evident from the number of articles written on district’s serenity. Most of the tourists visit this district to get a break from their hectic city life and enjoy a tryst with the nature.
Idukki is a natural habitat of rare species of flora and fauna. It houses various protected areas, such as the Kurinjimala Sanctuary, Periyar Tiger Reserve, Eravikulam National Park, Pampadum Shola National Park, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Thattekad Bird Sanctuary and Anamudi Shola National Park. While exploring these areas, visitors may get a rare chance to spot the endangered and endemic species including Grizzled Giant Squirrel, Nilgiri Tahr, Sambar Deer, Nilgiri Wood-pigeon, Tiger, Purple Frog, Elephant, Neelakurinji and Gaur. Besides exploring wildlife, tourists can also pay a visit to Kurisumala, Kumily, Pandikuzhi and Chellarkovil which are famous Idukki tourist places.
The Idukki Arch Dam is another far-famed tourist spot, enjoying its distinction of being world's second and Asia's first arch dam. Some other Idukki attractions include the Hill View Park, Nadukani, Palkulamedu, Thumpachi Calveri Samuchayam, Kulamavu, Painavu, Cheruthoni, Kalliyanathandu and Malankara Reservoir. In addition to the above mentioned places, tourists can pay a visit to Thommankuthu and Keezharkuthu to indulge in rock climbing, rappelling and mountaineering.
