I love India, but the cities, the traffic, the noise and the pollution is stressful. I also love farms, villages, rivers, swimming, clean air, pure water, learning, comfort, kindness, cleanliness, great food, relaxation, gardens, interaction with local people, beer, communal dining, worldly travelers, lovely families, and everything to effortlessly work well. Dewalokam is not near great temples, forts or celebrated tourist attractions. It is not about India of centuries ago. It is an example of what India might look like tomorrow, at least in dreams. Actually, it is the dream Jose and Sinta made available to us.

Absolutely brilliant. The hosts and staff could not have been more helpful and welcoming. Food was delicious. We enjoyed the inclusive activities especially the spice tour with Jose who is so knowledgeable and interesting. The village walk was also fun , and the visit to the local dressmaker resulted in very nice kulwar shameez which arrived the same day. Lovey rooms and particularly enjoyed sitting on the balcony overlooking the gardens & river

It's easy to give 5 star ratings. Perhaps once a year and only once, each reviewer should be able to award 6 stars for one experience which is over and above a routine 5 star rating. This would be mine. We have experienced great service, cleanliness, facilities, warmth, humour and attention to detail before. But Dewalokam, in my view take this to another level. It is not a 5 star hotel, but they do not charge 5 * accommodation prices. Jose, Sinta and Paul (their son) are delightful. They are polite, attentive, kind, enthusiastic, smiley (always) and funny; always looking out to do the extra thing to help make everyone's stay so special. We stayed 4 nights. It was originally three, but we'd heard from people in Munnar how good it was, so decided to check in early. Jose then sent a car to pick us up so we would arrive in time for lunch. THE FOOD. Sudesh, their chef, was incredible. Each night we went to the cooking demonstration to see 2 dishes being made (and served that night). We were then given a signed cook book from him. Whether it was breakfast, lunch or dinner - we had so much variety, colour and taste. Some of the dishes were divine. THE GROUNDS. On our first day, we went on the farm walk. They have goats, chickens, buffalo, cows, turkeys, and ducks. And then so many spices, fruits, vegetables and trees. There are so many butterflies. To relax, pick one of the many hammocks (either sun or shade) and look out over the river, spying kingfishers or eagles against the backdrop of a beautiful forest canopy. THE ROOM: Spotless, airconditioned, comfortable. So safe we felt, we never took the key out of the room and left it unlocked during the day. THE ACTIVITIES. I won't ruin this for you by spoiling the surprise. However Village Walk, Farm Walk, Town Visit as titles don't really do them justice. For example, the Village Walk takes you through a beautiful rubber plantation where you can witness "tapping" and "rubber collecting" at first hand. In the village, you can then visit a ladies' tailor who for 600 rupees can make you a wonderful hand-made top. All the ladies staying at Dewalokam while we were there, without exception, had at least a top made after each walk - and these were collected each night by Prince or Mani (thank you guys for everything), so that the ladies could show them off that night over dinner. I'd recommend a visit to the town (30 minutes by car). The shopping in two department stores was hastle and barter-free and much cheaper than Kochin. Sinta can even recommend a tailor there who can do quick and inexpensive alterations. After each activity, you return to be offered their speciality lime and ginger drink. THE RIVER. Swimming in it was fantastic fun. Yes. it's clean. Thank you to fellow guest Roger for encouraging me to climb up the tree to jump in. If you don't fancy the river, there is the pool complete with loungers. My recommendation. Go. And two days isn't enough, trust me. Our four days wasn't really, but I know that people on tours and on annual leave are constrained by the length of your holiday. So if your travel agent suggests two nights, squeeze in another one and grab a night from somewhere else. So thank you Jose and Sinta (and all of your staff and family). You made Kerala for us. And we will see you again. Don't change a thing.

This was the last stop of our trip to Kerala, had we known what a wonderful place this was we would have added on a couple of more days, the welcome was amazing, our room was large and luxurious, the food was excellent and cookery lessons were encouraged (free of charge). We had a tour around the grounds and a walk into the local village, a swim in the river and freshwater swimming pool. To top it off the choice of aravadic massages were amazing, which we were lucky enough to partake in. The staff and all of the family couldnt do enough for us. A fantastic way to finish an amazing holiday

Stayed here for a night - and in that time had a great garden tour and learnt a lot about spices, watched a cooking demo, met the cows and goats and water buffalo, swam in the river, did yoga and had a thoroughly pleasant time. Good food. Good company. Nice rooms. Great hosts. Well worth the visit. Thank you.
