Imphal is the capital city of the state of Manipur. The most important event marked in the history of this city is the Battle of Imphal in 1944. It was the first battle Japan ever lost on Asian soil. Various monuments have been built on the war locations in memory of the soldiers who lost their lives. Decades later, Imphal is now a quaint city protected by huge mountains. The green meadows and dense forests adorning the city form a major part of Imphal sightseeing.
The War Cemetery, one of the famous Imphal tourist places in the city, was built to commemorate the memories of martyrs of the Second World War. Another prominent attraction is the Kangla Fort which is a frontrunner among places to see in Imphal. The fort is far-famed for its great historical value and marvellous architecture. Other tourist attractions in and around Imphal are Loktak Lake (the only floating lake in the world), Manipur State Museum displaying artefacts of Manipur, Langthabal (hosting a palace with several temples) and Shri Govindajee Temple.
If time permits, tourists can also pay a visit to Matai Garden, polo ground and Sambal-Lei-Sekpil Garden. Besides sightseeing, tourists can enjoy shopping in the Paona market where a number of local as well as imported products are sold. Being in Imphal, they can also participate in various festivals to take a glimpse into the culture which natives follow. Since weather in Imphal is soothing for most of the months, tourists can visit this city during any season.
