Sonaar Haveli, Jaisalmer I chose to stay at Sonaar Haveli during my trip to Jaisalmer because it is located in a quiet neighborhood yet is very close to the citys tourist attractions. While the fort and Gadisar Lake are a kilometer away, the city centre is at a distance of half a kilometer. It was late evening by the time I reached the hotel. On arrival, I was welcomed with a refreshing glass of lemonade which had just the right balance of tanginess and sweetness. Sonaar Haveli is a boutique hotel which is lovingly curated by Bhim Singh and his daughter Madhuvanti Singh. They have over 5 decades of experience in travel and run Rajasthans most respected travel company called Rajasthan Tours Pvt. Ltd. This 8 roomed property has a good traditional and contemporary blend with an open courtyard, marble fountains and flooring, antique wall hangings made from zari and sequins and state of the art facilities. Feeling famished, I headed for dinner to relish some Rajasthani cuisine at Anaar Bagh which is the indoor air conditioned multi cuisine restaurant located at the lobby level. Mahaveer Singh, General Manager, Sonaar Haveli recommended I try the dal bati churma which is prepared in the authentic traditional way. It turned out to be extremely delicious and I savoured it with ker sangri, gatte ki sabji where gram flour dumplings are steamed and cooked in a gravy, papad ka saag, mangodi where gram dumplings that are dried and stored for a few months are cooked in a traditional Rajasthani gravy, bajre ki roti made from millet flour and sumptuous gajar ka halwa. Sonaar Haveli has an Ayurvedic treatment room called Om, sitting lounge and bar named amal (amal in Rajasthani refers to opium) where beer and wine are popular. Chaar Bagh is the outdoor dinner setting ideal for candlelight dinners, watching the sunset, royal cenotaphs and the former residence of the royal family of Jaisalmer which has now been converted into a hotel. For vegetarians there is finger licking paneer tikka, hara bhara kebab, vegetable seekh kebab, shahi kadai paneer, jaipuri bhindi masala where okra is cooked with spices and onions and baingan ka bharta where roasted aubergines are cooked with onions, tomatoes and spices. For non vegetarians, the highly coveted dishes include mouth watering chicken tikka, tandoori chicken and smoky flavored maas ke sule which is tender lamb marinated in 11 spices, laal maas, bhuna gosht and butter chicken. Dont miss jungli maas that is prepared with mutton, clarified butter, salt and chilli flakes and sand dune chicken curry which is boneless chicken in a thick masala gravy prepared Jaisalmeri style. The travel desk at Sonaar Haveli organized my itinerary and guide. I explored the Jaisalmer Fort which is a living fort and a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with Harish Giri, my knowledgeable guide who was fluent in Hindi, English and French. I awed at the intricacy of Patwon ki Haveli and Nathmalji ki Haveli before soaking in the vast expanse of Gadisar Lake. Paying homage to our martyrs at the Jaisalmer War Museum and going back in time at the Akal Wood Fossil Park ended my memorable trip to Jaisalmer. We are two couples traveling about India for a month. We stayed at the Sonaar for two nights. The hotel is located on a busy street. The hotel is chicly decorated with a modern boutique feel to it. The room was good sized and provided comfortable beds and basic toiletries. There was no hairdryer but I was provided one upon request. Mahaveen was very engaging, and the response from every staff member when we made a request was, "why not?" There is no outdoor yard, but there is a nice rooftop terrace that we enjoyed cocktails on, and were treated to a sensational sunset. The dining room service was slow, but each dish is individually cooked, and we all really enjoyed our breakfasts and dinners at the hotel. We had a very comfortable stay, and were well tended to by the staff.

Sonaar Haveli is an 8 bedded boutique hotel. Didnt have a lot of expectations with it. We just wanted a place to stay for a day before we proceeded for a wedding. But, what a pleasant surprise it was! When we entered, the decor and interiors looked very different and well planned. My husband being an architect said, this looks like a job of a professional.. and he was absolutely right! We got to know later that it has been designed by Good Earth. All their lamp shades, cutlery etc was from Good Earth and it definitely looked classy. Even though it was a small property but everything had a character. Even the rooms - small and not over the top luxury, but had all the amenities provided by a 4/5 star property - bath robes, safe, flip flop slippers, coffee maker etc. As far as the service is concerned, when we came there was only 1 person manning the reception and restaurant. He seemed to be a bit clever and not that friendly.. we asked him to book a safari for us but the experience with him was not that good.. however, the staff the next day was up to the mark. The food was okay.. breakfast was better than the lunch. All in all, a short and pleasant stay at Sonaar Haveli. Will definitely recommend this small and classy place!

We stayed here with friends and family. There are only 8 rooms in this gorgeous boutique hotel so we felt like the whole place belonged to us. The place is close to all the attractions and at the same time tucked away from the chaos of the main city. The food is freshly made to order and you can let the chef know how you want the spice level to be adjusted (an important thing if you are traveling in Rajasthan). The staff is extremely well behaved and the manager, Mahavir, makes an extra effort to make your stay comfortable. I really liked that the hotel did not charge us at all for all the bottled water we had during our stay. The best part of the stay for me was the visual appeal of the hotel. Everything is playfully decorated and it has a very nice dining room, lounge, and terrace. This was one of the most memorable stays for us.
