Memorable stay at Dhardo Retreat and Resort
by shaswataPal

Our family trip this december to Kalimpong has been one of the most memorable trips particularly due to our experience at Dhardo Retreat and Resorts. The Hotel is situated on the outskirts of Kalimpong just below the Deolo hill. A point to note is that it is situated on the side of the hill which doesn't face Kanchenjungha, but one gets wonderful view of the hill terrain (lolegaon hills can be seen from here). Morning and evening sunrise/sunset are exceptional on these hills which one can see from resort rooms. However with this one exception (not being able to see Kanchenjungha from the resort) I would give full marks to the resort in every respect. It is situated outside the city in the midst of pine and bamboo trees. The resort is three storied with two rooms on each floor. One room each on 1st and second floor face the hills while the other one faces the internal garden. The two rooms in ground floor are all hill facing. Besides there is a bamboo house as well as a tree house to spend ones days. The rooms are neat and clean and very well maintained. Bathrooms are very clean. Geyser is available in each one. However it would be good if wiper is provided in the bathroom as shower water sometimes doesn't flow out quickly. The whole building is made of wood and bamboo which gives a very pleasant feeling. There is a bamboo dining hut on first floor. It is really very very enjoyable to have ones hotly served tasty dinner specially during the cold winter months. The doors have netting and there is a notice provided to keep them shut to ward off insects. There was no insect problem in December but guess this could relate to the rainy season. The rooms were surprisingly warm even during the very cold days we spent there and we didn't need any heater facility.
The manager Mr Baudha is a very helpful and friendly person. Right from the beginning starting with calling up multiple times to guide us to the hotel to the end of the stay he has tried to make the stay most pleasant for us. I do remember instances when I bruised my toe and I learnt from him about medicinal herbs available there, and he promptly arranged for leaves of a special plant (teetapatti) to be crushed and applied. It was both treatment as well as education for me which I loved. Then there was the evening where he helped us create bonfire in the garden porch and helped us build up the fire. We spent the lovely night chatting in the warmth of the fire. Besides the bonfire arrangement there is also a nice hammock to spend ones time relaxing in natures lap. I would also like to mention about our cook Mr John. I have rarely seen anyone more sincere in his job and more accommodating. Each day he would help us with choices of dinner which always used to be served tasty and hot in the bamboo hut. One can also have it in room but we liked having it in Bamboo hut. He along with his apprentice Pappu would be always busy either serving delicious breakfast under umbrella in the garden porch or serving us tea or hot water or whatever else. One can never feel out of home in the presence of these gentlemen. Finally I would also like to mention about the owner of this property who has his own house and art gallery in the front of the property. He is a real gentleman and artist. Upon our request he gave us an engrossing tour of his art collection which had been completed throughout his entire life. He also gave us particularly my daughter hands on lessons on various native sports like Archery, a form of darts and a few others. It was such an enriching experience for all of us and specially for my daughter. She simply loved it.
So all in all it was an exceptional stay. I would like to thank the owner and staff of Dhardo Retreat and resort for making our stay so enjoyable.
PS - There is wifi available in the front desk but I would request to improve the quality of the same since as per our experience it was a bit difficult to get good signal. But perhaps this is the little price one pays for staying in the lap of nature.

Away from the crowds and traffic, situated in nature, this is the ideal place for a stay when visiting Kalimpong . Not far from any place and yet calm. The staff is so welcoming and warm... the rooms are nice and comfortable.. Would recommend this place strongly....

Excellent atmosphere and views. Staffs are very much interactive, charming and friendly. If you are a extrovert, you will feel like home from the very start. The only thing that is lacking is food quality. Not non-hygenic but taste is not matching the resort quality. But if you can adjust, it's the best place to stay in kalimpong, budget wise and comfort wise.
