The impression you will have of RIDE varies. If you look at it as booking a room for a night then it rates slightly below two stars; if you look at it as making a donation to support RIDE's work with local children and you get a place to sleep thrown in, it would rate as above two stars. We're writing this from the perspective of booking the room only, not from donating to RIDE's work. We booked one nights accommodation plus an afternoon silk tour organized by RIDE. Room cost was INR 2,000 plus INR 1,500 for the tour. On the positive side the owners are very hospitable and friendly people, especially the lady of the house who is really good company. The food was extra cost but was good and plentiful, cooked and eaten in their home. They did provide a place for our driver to sleep as well for the night. Power in the room worked consistently and the bedding was clean. On the negative side the accommodation is extremely basic. Ours consisted of a large sparsely furnished ground floor room; this was not a big problem except that the door and windows did not keep the hoards mosquitoes out (which were everywhere) but thankfully there was a mosquito net of sorts above the bed. The shared bathroom / toilet was outside the room and only had cold water, so it was an exposed dash through mosquitoes and visible to the road to shower etc. The sloped tiled ramp to the toilet made it a bit slippery. The tour was also a bit disappointing, not that the schools and temples and silk weaving weren't fascinating, but more that although we had booked and reconfirmed months in advance we were told when we got there that it was the drivers regular day off and they had no car. We therefore had to go on the tour using our driver and his car, but RIDE still charged us the full amount. So. If you look at this as strictly accommodation it's going to disappoint at this price point. If you view your room and tour payment as a donation to RIDEs worthy work in the area (and the room and the tour are simply a bonus) then you will probably be fine with it.

The start of their 'hospitality' was when we told them that our driver would join us for breakfast. To this they flatly told us that they only serve non-indians. Indians simply are not welcomed. The rest was simply quite horrible. All information about the place from the web, seemed misplaced.

Stayed here for 6 days during Pongal Celebration.Pongal is a four-days-long harvest festival celebrated in Tamil Nadu, one of the most important popular Hindu festivals of the year. Could not have been a better place for that. It is 5 km outside Kanchi, in a very nice clean and quiet residential area. Everybody in the area were embellishing the floor space of there dwelling entrance with decorative patterns called Kolam drawn using rice flour and different colour Powders by female members of the family on or before dawn. Jeyaraj, the Manager of RIDE, also organize tours to the nearby village for Pongal celebrations, and took another guest and me for a big gathering of Rotary Pongal celebration.I also took other tours with Jeyaraj. A very interesting week with a very friendly and helpful Family.

My wife and I stayed 4 nights here which was not long enough. Took a full day tour with Jeyaraj which included some temples, silk weavers and social projects (rural school, milk cooperative). Basic accomodation. Very good home cooking. Very helpful arranging car and driver for day trip to Mamallapuram and help catching train to Bangalore from Arrakonam junction. Though not many reviews on Tripadvisor this place is a going concern with guests constantly coming and going from around the world. Website may have outdated items but that's because they focus on their social projects and don't have a website manager. Check them out on Facebook. We spent 5 weeks in India and one of my all time highlights was visiting the goddess temple of Kamakshi Amma on Friday night during Navaratri which they arranged for us on 20 minutes notice when I asked them about it. Though our driver and guide spoke no English, one walked in front and the other behind leading us through the festival crowds. This is a major goddess temple in south india and one of the reasons we chose Kanchi as a destination. Thank you Britto and Jeyaraj!

We chose to stay at RIDE because we were interested in learning about the reality of a rural development organization. We had one full day of visiting the projects that RIDE has been involved with over the 30 years of its existence. The projects range from abolishing child labor in weaving factories, to establishing schools, to supporting a village self-help group, to creating a sewing program for girls. This is solid grass roots development, and hosts Jey and Britta are dedicated to creating a better world. It was a delight to stay with them. The food was delicious. Britta would also teach cooking if anyone were inclined. The accommodation is very basic. There is AC, the beds are comfortable, and there is wi-fi in the central living space. Even if you are booked somewhere else, it is well worth contacting Jey for information about RIDE. P
