Our room was shabby. There was no warm water in the bathroom and we actually had to have a cold shower. When we turned on the kettle it blew a fuse and we were in darkness. It took a little while to find someone to assist us and give Light.

My wife and I stayed here for 1 night while on our tour of Rajasthan. This is a heritage site and can see why. It is like stepping back to the 1930s and it was just an amazing experience. The present Maharajah of Karauli lives here with his family and we were treated like friends of the family rather than hotel guests. We wish we had 2-3 nights here as it was such an experience. If you go ask if you can visit the Deaf/Blind School that the Maharajah is Patron off. My wife is a British Sign Language interpreter and the children loved her..... Truly a wonderful experience. We would return here in a heartbeat.

Taking a step back in time with basic rooms and facilities. A charming old colonial style building. Our room was full of mosquitos which took some time to kill. A grand setting which was an interesting place to stay in a rural setting.

We had an unforgettable few days at Bhanwar Vilas Palace Hotel. Food, service, ambience, setting were all delightful. The heritage hotel is home to the Mararaja of Karauli and he and his family run the hotel. We had some fascinating conversations with them about their family history and the architectural history of the beautiful building. It was built in 1938 and has many original art deco features, furniture and fittings. The food is delicious and freshly cooked. It is an amazing experience to eat in the courtyard garden under the stars - where one night we watched a cookery demonstration before eating. There is a beautiful swimming pool and extensive grounds (all beautifully maintained) to wander around. Don't miss the stable of magnificent Marwari horses where horse rides can be arranged. Our favourite activity was to sit outside our bedroom sipping a lime soda while enjoying the lovely courtyard with its delightful gardens. If you are feeling energetic however, a walk into the town of Karauli is a really interesting experience. This is an authentic, lively little town and you get a sense of ordinary life and business activity going on about you. If you like jewellery, the lac bracelet sellers have an amazing collection of bracelets at very good prices. Finally, a trip to Bhanwar Vilas Palace is not complete without a tour of the ancient and fascinating City Palace - the former home of the Karauli family until the present Mararaja's grandfather moved out and built the new palace. The City Palace is being lovingly restored and contains within its walls a history going back centuries. The tour we did of this palace was the highlight of our stay. The fresco paintings in particular are amazing.

First impression - walking in to a film set that turns out to be living history with a modern twist. The staff is highly professional, discreet yet friendly and I would have liked to spend longer here than our itinerary permitted. Some of the room facilities were a tad quirky but in a way that added to the ambience rather than detracted. And if you're lucky, there are visitors and proprietors who engage in memorable discourse without ever being intrustive. Unforgettable in the best way. Also highly recommended is the village walk (yes, on foot) starting from the hotel; but be prepared for people's curiosity.
