Situated on the banks of Kali River, Karwar is a town in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka that marks the western coast of Indian Peninsula. Formerly spelt as Carwar, this seaside town was once a major trade centre for Arabs, Dutch, Portuguese, French and the British. However, the present Karwar town is an entirely new settlement and is one of the best natural harbours in the world. Located in Baithkol area, Karwar Port serves the inland regions of northern Karnataka, southern Maharashtra and Goa. The beaches, islands and mangroves up on the Kali River make Karwar trip a fascinating experience.
With Arabian Sea on one side and Western Ghats on the other, the town of Karwar features picturesque environs, lush green hills, splendid mountains and pristine beaches. Karwar, Devbagh, Kaju Bagh, Koodi Bagh, Binaga, Tilmatti, Majali and other such beautiful beaches in Karwar allow travellers to indulge in a host of marine activities including scuba diving, snorkelling and boating. Vacationers can also undertake a sightseeing expedition of the town to explore the Sadashivgad Fort standing on a 200 ft high hilltop. Located by the Kali River Bridge, this abandoned fort offers a beautiful view of the surroundings.
Tourist places in Karwar further include Oyster Rock Lighthouse, Kurumgad Island, Hyder Ghat Pass, Devkar Falls, Shirve Ghat, Habbu Mountain and Chendia Falls. There are plenty of religious attractions in the town as well that draw pilgrims from across the country, the most popular ones being Durga Temple, Naganatha Temple, Narasimha Temple, Venkataramana Temple and Dargah of Peer Shan Shamsuddin Kharobat. Rich in flora and fauna, Karwar also has something to offer to wildlife lovers with Anshi National Park. The best time to visit this serene town is during the winter season, from November to February.
