What's Good: WONDERFUL PLACE, IN THE LAP OF NATURE EXCELLENT FOOD.
by hitesh360 on September 2, 2018
I write this review after having discovered Ocean Deck homestay less than a month back yet having spent three of the following four weekends here. The location, for starters,is a treat for sore eyes.Located amidst the backwaters with a stunning view of the confluence of the sea,the Kali river and another tributary of the Shravathi IIRC,it bowls you over right there. And the icing on the cake is the majestic background of the Western Ghats covered with amazingly low clouds. Add generous helpings of a gentle breeze and sights and sounds of nature which you'd rarely hear in a city and the place endears you even further. In my three visits to the place, two over lunch and one over dinner,I've heard peafowls crying, cuckoos cooing, foxes howling interspersed with a generous chatter of crickets, sparrows and crows.Nature's cacophony at it's absolute best, courtesy the mangroves opposite the homestay. And not to forget, the silence surrounding the place which calms you without being creepy. The owner of the place,Vinay Naik,is super friendly and knows how to take care of his guests.A lot of thought has gone into customising the 8 room homestay and it's visible when you go around the property. And the fact that the owner lives at the property ensures quality in everything that's on offer there. Available as part of lunch/dinner/daytime packages/stay packages, the food is an absolute delight and an absolutely authentic representation of the regional cuisine. The breakfast usually comprises of South Indian delicacies, the leaf wrapped Kode Idlis and amazingly soft Neer Dosas, being the standouts. Come during the day and you can make a trek across the river to the opposite side, see the Mangroves up close along the coast with breathtaking scenery and virgin beaches untouched by the civilian population. It's all guided with Vinay himself taking his guests along sharing expert quips on the region like a seasoned guide. And in case you want a different adventure,Vinay and his boys can take you for a trek to the Tilamati Beach, which is one of India's only two black-soil beaches. Post the trek, you can go for a kayak/coracle ride,or go fishing or just laze around post a shower. And if you thought that's the best part, hold on.It gets better. The best part turns out to be it's sea-food platter lunch, all fuelled by the freshest catch the region has to offer.Vinay takes great care to ensure that only the best of the seafood makes it to his guests' plate. The platter usually starts with a smattering of fish rawa fry/masala fry, prawns(the most succulent I've ever had),squid, shells, lobster, shark and crabs, every preparation worth it's weight in gold. Everything prepared here is from organic spices, not to mention the fresh catch and is cooked by a couple of ladies from the same village thus giving a real homely feel to the food. The main course of paper thin chapatis, steamed rice, fried rice,Prawns Biryani/Seafood Biryani,Crabs masala/Fish Masala is as delicious and leaves you craving for more. To round off the platter, there's hot kokum drink and dessert which could be anything from Gulab Jamun to Kheer. Laze around post lunch, maybe take a nap and soak in the silence and you'd wake up to the best Onion Bhajjis(i'm not kidding, they're the best bhajjis I've had in my 2 years in Karnataka) and Tea/Coffee. If you're staying back, nothing like it.And even if you're not, trust me,with the best food and the best ambience possible in these parts, you've still created a golden memory.

Staying at Ocean Deck is definitely my best home stay so far. I would give it a 4.5 star rating. The place is aptly located next to a river, a few minutes walk to the beach in an absolutely pure and pristine environment. You can quite enjoy the non-polluted environment around. The rooms are comfortable and the staff ensures that they are kept very clean. The owner (Vinay) and his staff are super friendly, courteous and make you feel so much at home. Vinay had so many interesting stories and trivia about the environment around, the wild life around, the history of the place etc. He spent a lot of time with the kids and explaining with patience the kinds of birds around, the marine life in the surroundings, the plants and herbs used by locals etc, and the kids would look forward for a session with Vinay where he would share his experience and knowledge on all the above. To top it all he is a great host and chef as well. In our two days at the property I probably had the most yummy food and I stuffed myself with more prawns, squids, crabs, oysters, various types of fish etc than I have consumed in the last year. Not to mention that Vinay personally takes care to see that we try different types of preparations every meal. He went to the extent to ensure that every meal had a non-spicy version for the kids, and a regular version for the adults. The vegetarians were truly amazed by the variety and options that were served in every meal. As a matter of fact, there is no fixed menu to order / choose from, and so we just left it to Vinay to decide the menu for us. Finally, the most interesting part of the food experience was that all the masalas are prepared at the homestay itself. The property offers a variety of activities like kayaking, boating, nature trails, visit to the nearest dam and other local must see places and these may be at an additional cost. The beach is only a few minutes away by walk and we had a hard time to get the kids out of water each time they were at the beach. The only problem is that the approach to the place is not through a very smooth road, but hey that has its own advantages as well !! In a nutshell we did not miss the TV, other gadgets and just indulged in the nature, the noise free environment, the hospitality and food, and the pure air around. A perfect getaway for 'relaxing and winding down' from the stressful city life.

If you truly want to get away from the crowded resorts and lodges, this is a gem. The property is a home to a local konkan family and they spoil you silly with plethora of delectable seafood dishes. This home stay is at the cusp of a river flowing into the sea. Apart from stuffing you face with great food, there are range of activities you can indulge in ranging from Kayaking, beach treks, motor boating or just lazing around. This is my happy place! Thank you Mr. Vinay for always making us feel comfortable. Word of advise: 1. Carry good sturdy slippers for beach treks. While walking on water can be fun, you risk getting your feet cut due to shells or stray cocunut shells. Sometimes there can be jelly fishes too. Do not remove your slippers and walk in the water. 2. Not a party place. So if you plan to get rowdy, head to Goa. Head here only if you are looking for a quiet and quality sojourn.

We stopped overnight at Ocean Deck on our way along the coastal road back to Pune during a driving holiday. We reached Karwar later than we planned and it was pitch dark when we drew close to Ocean Deck and Google Maps looked a little doubtful - but after an exciting last mile drive alongside a creek we finally reached. Vinay Naik who runs Ocean Deck was very welcoming - and the dinner he served was delicious especially for sea food lovers. Vinay is a very attentive host, lives with his family on the property. The rooms were located right next to the water - a lovely expanse of green grass and coconut trees provided a refreshing sight to wake up to. Vinay and his team took us on a long walk along Devbagh beach to show us the sights (wading through the water at one point). The refreshing walk (with some incidental bird watching - 3 species of kingfishers!) was followed by a mangrove planting where each of us planted a mangrove seed - a small contribution to keeping the planet green! We also went on a kayak ride around the creek and rounded it all up with a delicious breakfast. Vinay is a gracious host - and we intend to go back to Ocean Deck soon because overnight was too short a stay for such a lively place.
