Kaziranga is a protected area in India, occupying an area of 429 sq. km in the Golaghat and Nagaon districts of Assam. Established in the year 1916 as 'Kaziranga Game Sanctuary', this biological hotspot has a diverse variety of both flora and fauna species. The name of the location was changed to 'Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary' in 1950 and later to 'Kaziranga National Park' in 1974. The globally recognised body of UNESCO declared this national park as a World Heritage Site in 1985 owing to its natural environment.
Kaziranga National Park serves as a habitat for the largest number of one-horned rhinoceros in the world. Apart from rhinoceros, the national park protects over 35 species of mammals and birds including the rare greater adjutant stork, Bengal florican, wild boar, capped langur, hog badger, otter, leopard, sambar and wild elephant. For the conservation of avifauna, including thousands of migratory birds that are attracted to the region during the winter season, Kaziranga is declared as an 'Important Bird Area' by BirdLife International.
During a trip to Kaziranga, Kohora Range, Agartoli Range, Bagori Range and Burapahar Range are some of the must visit places. While elephants and turtles can be spotted in the Agartoli Range, the Kohora range is an ornithologist's paradise with rich birdlife. The Great Indian One-horned Rhinoceros can be commonly seen in the Bagori and Burapahar ranges. Visitors can also indulge in trekking and bird watching in Kukurkata Reserve Forest and Panbari Reserve Forest, so as to enjoy the serenity and beauty of the forest.
The best time to plan a trip to Kaziranga is from December to March; the park usually remains closed in the months of May through October.
