This was our tenth trip to Kodaikanal but the first to Cinnabar. We had seen some good reviews on Tripadvisor but as they say, seeing is believing. On the way up the hills from Coimbatore, we had a minor accident in the car we had booked thru a travel portal which resulted in us being stranded about 50 km from Kodai. A call to our host Bala and he very quickly arranged for us to travel in another car without much delay. Throughout the remainder of the journey, Bala was constantly in touch monitoring our progress up the hills. A very warm welcome followed on arrival and we were shown to a very comfortable and pleasing cottage just a few steps away from the main house. I could go on and on about the well maintained garden, the crisp and clean linen etc. etc. But this is to be generally expected. This was a homestay which to my mind is all about the hosts. Vasu and Bala are very warm and enthusiastic hosts who put in a great deal of effort and passion in everything they do to keep the guests well looked after. We were personally served every meal by them. A special mention has to be made of the very tasty homemade granola and the mouth watering desserts that followed every dinner. They grow most of the vegetables in their organic garden. Excellent conversations followed every meal in a cosy room by the fireplace. This was undoubtedly our best stay in Kodaikanal so far and we hope to revisit Cinnabar in the future. Vasu and Bala, thanks for everything and we are going to miss you guys and your lovable dog Luna terribly.

Cinnabar is a slice of heaven in the hills of Southern India. We cannot recommend staying here highly enough. Bala and Vasu are the kindest hosts and made us feel immediately at home in their beautiful house, and were charming fireside companions in the evenings. Throughout our stay they provided us with excellent recommendations for activities and have a raft of local knowledge that helped make our time in Kodaikanal very special. The home cooked meals are delicious and most of the food comes from their bountiful vegetable garden. The rooms are comfortable, clean and have everything you could want and more.

Cinnabar homestay is the perfect model of what a homestay should be. Clean, well-maintained, comfortable rooms set a few feet away from the hosts' own dwelling; veritable feasts for dinner each night made with love and attention to detail; dessert served in the hosts' living room; genuine and engaging conversation with the hosts; a treasure of information about the town: all of this made us feel like we were staying with family. Bala and Vasu, the hosts, will regale you with stories of plum farming, cheese making, and sustainable living. If that's not enough, they'll guide you to where you can find the best avocados in the bazaar area and where you can hike to for the best view of the Nilgiris. PS - Don't leave without their homemade granola recipe!

This homestay ticks all the boxes but the real value comes from its charming hosts Bala and Vasu. They were so welcoming, attentive, kind and lively. We loved having interesting discussions with them in the evening and felt enriched by their company. And not forgetting of course the friendly dog Luna. Clean and comfortable rooms with well-chosen selection of bedside reading, lovely warm showers and WiFi. The two double rooms are apart from the main house, but only a few paces away from the living room fire, good discussion and board games. Good location up the hill and out of the bustle of Kodaikanal town. It felt like we were back home - lovely organic fruit and veg garden (which the hosts very happily showed us round, and was the source of delicious dinner dishes), and beautifully decorated stone house with homely atmosphere. The hosts have lived and worked in the area and are a wealth of knowledge! Good was definitely a highlight! Both Bala and Vasu have a passion for cooking and delight in creating healthy, delicious meals, with plenty of ingredients from their garden. Simply tasty - well dressed salad, freshly baked bread rolls, dill fish, spiced paneer, sweet potato mash... and for pudding delicious coffee cake and the best cheesecake I have ever tasted from Balas homemade cheese. Hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, homemade granola and fantastic coffee. Very considerate (and creative) to dietary requirements. The best home cooking of our holiday!

Scrumptious Food + Lively Conversations + Unobtrusive Staff + Cosy & Tastefully Appointed Rooms + A lush garden overflowing with exotic veggies & fruits + Luna the dog = A perfect homestay All this thanks to the wonderful hosts, Bala & Vasu, who accommodated us at the last moment, although they themselves had just returned that very day. We had a great time with much needed R&R. Cinnabar is a place to visit again and again!
