We booked this hotel through Agoda and, as we were arriving late, we phoned ahead to let the manager know our plane didn't land until 2235 so we wouldn't get to the hotel until at least 2330. This was fine, they would await our arrival. The taxi driver was unsure where he was going and asked about 5 people along the way. If you do come to the hotel (and I highly recommend you don't), ignore the Mirza Ghalib part of the address and just aim for Sudder Street. The hotel is down an alley next to Super Chicken, Bar and Hotel. When we got there at about 2320, there was a padlocked gate across the door and we had to knock on the glass for about 10 minutes before we got a response. The man who came to answer was very surly and did not seem to know anything about our booking. With much persistence, we managed to persuade him to let us in so we could find our name in the book. We found it and were shown to a small, dark and grotty room with two hard beds and a very loud fan. This was mounted to a wall on the other side of the room and gave no relief from the hot night air. We had to go back downstairs to sign the register and hand over our passports, as well as use the tiny closet which purported to be the shared bathroom. The manager said he'd have to get the passports photocopied which would cost 5 rupee. I gave him a 10 note and he refused to give me change. The next morning when we went down for a shower (in an even smaller closet), he went into the cubicle next door and sat on the floor washing himself. This was fine but used all the water so we were unable to have showers. This happened every morning, no matter what time we got up. We checked out on our final day and the manager asked us for a tip. We laughed this off thinking we'd never have to return. Unfortunately, we couldn't get a seat on the train from NJP to Allahabad so had to go back to hotel to leave our bags whilst we killed time in Kolkata. There was a new guy in charge (possibly the owner) and at first he was happy to help, charging us 20 rupee to store our bags in the corridor. I then went to wash my hands as they were a bit mucky after 21 hours of travelling from Darjeeling and the manager stormed out of his office and insisted I had to pay 100 rupee if I wanted to use the shower. I told him 3 times I was just washing my hands before he finally backed down and skulked back to his office. Overall, the hotel is cheap and you get what you pay for in terms of facilities but the staff make it a really unpleasant experience.
