What's Good: Best Heritage Hotel Ever Found
by Akrur_Barua on December 31, 2018
Back in November, when a friend suggested Kota as a travel destination, I was more than wary. Like most of us, I knew Kota for one thing: The coaching centers that aspirants for Indias best engineering colleges flock to. However, something in my friends voice and his reputation as a nature lover made me think. What the hell, I finally said to my wife, lets explore. And off we went for a stay at Sukhdham Kothi and to explore Kota. We arrived early on a cold December morning and were pleasantly surprised to find Col Keshvendra Singhthe proprietor and every bit an officer and a gentlemanwaiting to pick us up. We hit it off instantly and what followed for the next few days was wonderful conversations, warm hospitality, bountiful nature, and great food. Sukhdham Kothi is nestled near the cantonment area. Folks travelling from Delhi or Mumbai can opt for a train. If visitors prefer the aerial route, they can hop off at Jaipur and then embark on a 33.5-hour journey by road (the hotel can arrange that, of course for a fee). With fine manicured lawns, trees that are timeless, and peacocks dancing away, the setting for this place couldnt have been more perfect. After a warm welcome by the staff and tea and biscuits, we were taken to our room, which had an old-world charmbe it the ceiling fan, the wooden furniture, or the bathtub. The room we stayed in opened out to a wonderful seating area. It later turned out to be a great refuge to down a beer or sip on hot coffee. When we went for breakfast the first time, both Col Singh and his wife, Neha, were there to enquire about us. The food was great and the conversations even better. The food menu is quite diverse. Be it mouth-watering Rajasthani fareboth vegetarians and non-vegetarians can expect to satiate their taste budsor food to adjust to your palate, Sukhdham Kothi has it all. Once your meals during the day are over, you can savor the greenery outside by lazing on a chair in the garden and maybe read a book with the constant twitter of birds as background score. For those who love to sit outside in the evening, especially over a drink in the company of friends and family, the poolside is an exquisite haunt (a new bars coming up soon). Over a fire to keep us warm and snacks that blend, we enjoyed our evenings. The folks at Sukhdham Kothi have a passion for nature. Through their Kota Trails offering, we experienced first-hand the beauty Kota has to offer. Our first journey was an enchanting boat ride on the Chambal river. For the wildlife lover, there is a bounty herebirds, crocodiles, and an occasional sloth bear and leopard (the last two if you are lucky). I wanted to see crocodiles and three of them obliged while the birders in our group had a ballfrom Indian eagle owls to the white-throated kingfisher, we saw them all. The next day, we had a sample of street food as we walked down the old town. One afternoon we went to Gadariya Mahadev, a forest about an hour away. The view from atop of the Chambal is to die for. The day progressed with a further expedition deep into the forest surrounding the Jawahar Sagar Dam area and ended with a majestic view of the sun going down from a view-point deep in the wild. Overall, Sukhdham Kothi (and their Kota Trails) was a revelation, made even more memorable by the great hospitality of everyone out there. Thanks so much to all of them. We are already making plans for our next visit.

Driving from Jhansi to Udaipur,we wanted to night halt at Kota. Googling we got the name of this heritage hotel in Kota. Sceptically we booked and arrived to a pleasurable surprise. Amidst the Kota hustle and bustle sits this Victorian bungalow in its orange hue of the night. First surprise it was a surprise hotel on a decent budget prices. I would say rather modest price. Check in was smooth, Second surprise was the room, I did not expect such a large but tastefully done room. We as frequent travelers look for a wow room and clean bathroom. Sukhdham was the perfect choice. Third surprise was the food, we being non-vegetarians always pick a hotel with good food. Sukhdham offered the best Chicken biryani what we can think of. The dining room was antique and decorated with a large sized mirror over the fire place that spoke grandeur, the walls were full of old pics of a bygone era but which spoke well of the history of the hotel. The server was courteous and very ardent admirer of good eaters, which we can say we are. Appreciation always takes out the best in the hotel kitchen and staff. Fourth surprise was the next morning when woken up by peacocks amidst the concrete jungle of Kota. When you go on the roof you look all around you sees mango trees laden with green and unripe mangoes and peacocks all over the place. Takes you by surprise such green surroundings in the middle of Kota. Check out was also smooth. Now for a little suggestion, though the owner has done an excellent job in managing this hotel, just my hunch is it can do wonders if managed by an hotel group. The property can do more of greenery. A traveller like me just once to sit in the cool verandas around the Victorian era building just Doing nothing. There was a swimming pool but I am not aware that it was functional because the reception person could not give a straight answer over its functionality. Though they manage a pool side bar cum restaurant. All in all the stay was a surprise and a pleasant one at that. Ask me if I will visit again I would say definitely if the pool functions.

It is a good place to stay to Kota. Quite calm, which is rare in India! The rooms are comfortable, the place very beautiful and authentic. The main thing to improve would be to be able to have breakfast on time, to be able to go to meeting on time with a full belly.
