I had the pleasure to spend 12 days at this wonderful retreat and have to say, the Ayurvedic care I got by the professional team was just superb. I want to mention the doctors who consulted with me twice daily - Dr. Lal and Reshmi and the Ayurvedic practitioner Thanky - how awesome it was to be in your hands and get the care I desperately needed. I went to this place to solve a long-standing health problem and made some major progress during my stay. Of course, I need to mention the food as well, which is delish and the great location, on a hill right by Chowara beach. The bungalows are lovely and there are abundant possibilities to find a place to chill all over the resort. I will definitely go back.. very soon.

My husband and I have stayed for 2 wks. The staff was extremely kind and helpful. The treatments were professionally done, and always proceeded by a doctors consultation. Everything was clean and we felt so very well taken care of. The food felt sometimes a bit blunt, but not being used to a total vegetarian menu, it was most likely our tastebuds that needed more time to get accustomed. The hut where we stayed was very comfortable and the hammock outside our entrance was heavenly. The view over the Arabian Sea was stunning; the waves were a bit ferocious, but the lifeguards on the beach were giving good guidance when to swim and how far to go. The really sad thing was all the plastic lying around outside the resorts beach and seeing the animals feeding among this garbage; this broke my heart as the wildlife and the nature was amazingly fantastic.....a huge wish is something forceful is done for this to be cleaned up. The hotel arranged extra excursions if anyone wanted to a very reasonable price. Good pickup service was included from and to the airport.

I return to Somatheeram again and again, probably eight times since in 2003. I have been traveling the world most of the time for the past 18 years, and Somatheeram is my favorite destination! The resort is beautiful: authentic Kerala style with carved wood and thatched rooves, delicious freshly prepared food fit for a gourmet and also for specific Ayurvedic purposes. The setting is just above the rolling Arabian Sea, in the midst of the Kerala forest, and luxuriant with flowering plants and trees. There are many service personnel, all performing their tasks with diligence, courtesy, charm, and grace. The doctors work out the Ayurveda treatments, diet, and healthful behavior carefully in consultation with the patient, and there are daily meetings with the doctor. There are many aspects to the treatment performed by the therapists, but one of the most pleasant, in my estimation, is the daily 90-minute Ayurveda massage. I have departed Somatheeram after every stay feeling refreshed, serene, happy, and recharged with energy.

We are a couple in our 30s and visited the resort with the expectation to receive professional massages and to expand our yoga skills. Instead we received mediocre oil massages on itchy ripped massage beds and elementary yoga sessions in snail tempo. The experience was further soured by the unwillingness of management for a partial refund. With regards to the Ayurveda treatment, it was our mistake not to better inform us about this pseudoscientific approach, please do so. After a brief interview you are swiftly categorized in one of three, which might appeal to the clueless and hypochondriac. If you are a critical thinker, live an active lifestyle and have experienced a sports massage, then the Somatheeram Resort is at best a ridiculously expensive and comic experiment for you. While the food is ok (not special), guest tend to visit the dining area post-massage in their rope and with bandages around the head, giving the place the atmosphere of a sick bay rather than resort. It might be bemusing for a day of two, then I lost my appetite. After four days of seeing mainly mature people dressed for a Zombie movie we decided to cut our stay short by 6 days, which should tell you a lot given that we paid a steep price during the high season. Having already pre-paid for the full stay, including an extra 100 surcharge for new years dinner, we asked for a partial-refund, not for lodging understandably but for food and treatment that we did not consume. This is where we discovered the profit-maximizing side of the resort. While the manager agreed to wave a bill of extra charges, it took a herculean effort of back and forth communication to receive of what amounts to a 10% discount; not in cash but as a voucher for the next stay. Thank you very much but we will pass on that one. Our experience matches the one of at least one other couple who couldnt be bothered to write a review.

I travelled a lot, however, never felt like sharing my experiences regarding food, accommodation and transportation, as there was nothing different or new, but this time I met this person(Krishna sagar) an employee of somatheeram, who is actually severing guest beyond hid listed duties and try to make guest's stay easy and delightful. The way he handles guest's problems is amazing. He makes sure that his guests never face any issues during there stay and if in case any issue arises he gives his best to resolve it. He is polite, gentle and extremely talented in guest handling....and I can surly say this ... yes he is the one coz of whom I liked my stay at somatheeram coz good staff makes a good property (hotel, resort)...in hotel or service industry good staff is plays important role in its success...
