We were on the way back to Bangalore from Chikmagalur and went to Kudremukh to experience the drive. At the forest check post we learned that there are options to stay inside the national park. We were directed to Sahyadri Bhavan by the forest officer in the forest office. Fortunately we got rooms here. It was an amazing experience to stay right in the mid of the dead town. Food from the canteen was amazingly delicious though they had only limited options (only meals was available as it was Diwali weekend and they were understaffed) When its night, you can feel th eeriness of the once well populated town. Even this guest house itself is a living remainder of how perfect the old township was. The room rates and food price was amazingly cheap for the quality provided.

This guest house is the best place here in Kudremukh. (Cause it is the only place you can stay or else if you can manage a tent or something in the jungle.. kidding). The management is warm and helpful. Food is awesome. Mainly we get veg here, but if you request for chicken items they make it for you. Must say the chef is so caring. Inside the guest house, we have a lot of facilities to get yourself some activity: Billiards room, badminton, swimming pool, reading room, cards room, table tennis and many others. Around this guest house is a vast forest reserve. This guest house and other quarters were built many years ago. You can roam around, visit the temple, church and the mosque roads which are very nearby to each other. Totally it is a place for budget seekers, nature lovers, also there is no geyser so you have to manage with the ice cold water. :)

Staying at Sahyadri Bhavan during my weekend trip to Kudremukh; I felt like I had stepped into a time travel machine and traveled back 30 years. This well-maintained guesthouse, lies in the middle of the now abandoned KIOCL township. Sahyadri Bhavan constantly reminded me of hotels and houses that I had seen in movies from the 80s. Mosaic flooring, weird switch boards, large foyers with paintings strewn on almost every wall and roomy stairwells. I half expected to encounter people with bell bottoms and crazy hair. It must have been quite the deal in its heyday. Walking around the place, I must admit I spooked myself a bit imagining all the grand parties and childrens events and get-togethers that it hosted surely. It is a perfectly preserved slice of the past tucked away in the ruins of its own history. And to it's credit, the staff are extremely polite and helpful, the food served is good and all in all is not at all expensive. It may not appeal to a modern sensibility, with no television and creaky questionable beds and tiny bathrooms, but it is an experience that you will definitely remember.
