Kumbakonam is a town located in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. This ancient town is bordered by Kaveri and Arasalar Rivers from north and south direction, respectively. The town has a long history as it has been ruled by various dynasties such as Cholas, Pandyas, Madurai Nayaks, Thanjavur Nayaks and Thanjavur Marathas. A Kumbakonam tour takes visitors through a religious and joyful spiritual journey.
The town is popularly known as the "temple town" as it is replete with temples and mathas. Some of the renowned Kumbakonam tourist places are the Sarangapani Temple, the Ramaswamy Temple and the Kumbeswara Temple. The Saranagpani Temple is a 15th century shrine, which was built by the Nayak rulers. The well revered 16th century Ramaswamy Temple, built by a Nayak king is also a prominent religious centre. The stone carvings on the walls of the temple depict the scenes from the Ram-Katha. There are many wall paintings on temple, which portray the incidents from the Hindu epic Ramayana. One of the prominent temples of the region is the Kumbeswara Temple, which is more than 1300 years old. Every year, a large number of devotees visit this temple. The Mahamaham festival, which is organised every 12 years, is quite famed among the devotees.
Kumbakonam sightseeing also includes a visit to several 'mathas', located in the town and nearby areas. Some of the nearby religious centres include Thirupureswarar Temple of Patteeswaram, the Swamimalai Murugan Temple and the Airavateswarar Temple at Darasuram. In vicinity of this place, one can also find a branch of Vaishnavite Ahobila Mutt.
