Kushinagar is regarded as one of the four main pilgrimage sites for Buddhists, the other three being Lumbini, Bodhgaya and Sarnath. This city marks the site where Gautam Buddha delivered his last sermon and subsequently died and attained Parinirvana. Buddhists from India as well as outside have built shrines and temples in this city for the large number of monks and pilgrims who either plan a Kushinagar tour often or reside here permanently. These factors have made this city in Uttar Pradesh extremely significant and sacred for the Buddhist religion.
Sightseeing in Kushinagar enables tourists to be acquainted with the Buddhist culture and also witness some monuments and temples of great historical significance. Primary among these is the Mahaparinirvana Temple which has high religious value. The temple houses a magnificent statue of Lord Buddha made of red sandstone standing over 6 m tall. Just behind this temple is the Nirvana Chaitya or the main stupa which was excavated in the year 1876. Another place of significance is the Ramabhar Stupa or Mukutbandhan Chaitya, which is the site of cremation of Gautam Buddha. Devotees offer prayers around a large hemispherical drum with a diameter of 47.24 m at the base.
Other Kushinagar tourist places include religious places like Matha Kuar Shrine, Meditation Park, Indo-Japan-Sri Lanka Temple, Wat Thai Temple, Linh Son Chinese Temple, Shiva Temple, Japanese Temple and Ram Janaki Temple. A museum managed by the state government which displays relics and antiquities of archaeological importance is also worth a visit. Remains of various monasteries constructed at different time periods in the past are located near the Nirvana Temple and can be visited.
Apart from sightseeing and getting to know about Kushinagar and its culture, shopping is the next best activity for tourists. Visitors can take home souvenirs from the city like replicas of various temples and monasteries to create lifelong memories of their Kushinagar trip.
