Malpe town, a natural port, is located in the Udupi district of Karnataka. Besides being located along the coastline, nature has generously bestowed magnificence upon the town. Malpe lies at a distance of only 6 km from the Udupi city, at the confluence of river Udyavara and the sea. The town plays a vital role in the trade activities of the region as it is a main port and fishing spot on the state's coastline. Apart from fishery, coconut and tile manufacturing industries are the developing industries of the town. A tourist on a trip to Malpe can behold a host of numerous popular attractions such as scenic beaches and old temples.
The Malpe Beach is an enchanting and the most favoured place among Malpe attractions. The picturesque beach has been widely acclaimed by both locals as well as visitors. Unlike other beaches of India, the Malpe Beach is clean, well maintained and scantily crowded. Another amazing place, St. Mary's Islands is a rocky heap made up of volcanic lava flow and waves. This captivating place impresses tourists all round the year. It is believed that Vasco Da Gama, the Portugese explorer, arrived at the island and named it as "Mother Mary". There are numerous other places in the neighbourhood of the city worthy of a visit like Daria-Bahadurgad, Kari-Illada-Kallu and Daria-Gadara-Kalluthe.
The highly revered places of worship in the town like Balarama and Ananteshwara are visited by thousands of devotees every year. The Ananteshwara Temple is dedicated to Lord Parashurama and the presiding deity is in form of a 'lingam'.
