Manipal is a famous university town located at the suburb of the Udupi city in Karnataka. Its strategic location on the rocky hinterland of the Malabar Coast makes it an attractive tourist destination. Once a barren land, this hill was transformed into a university town by Dr. TMA Pai in the year 1950. The presence of the vast Arabian Sea in the west and the sky touching ranges of Western Ghats in the east present every tourist a sight to behold. It is not just the university and the quintessential views of Western India that Manipal tour is famed for. This beautiful hilly land is also bestowed with some of the most beautiful beaches in India.
'Manipal' got its name from 'mannu palla'; 'mannu' meaning mud and 'palla' meaning lake. The mannu palla lake stretches over an area of 400 m and is located centrally in the town. This lake coupled with the beautiful surroundings is one of the renowned Manipal attractions. Enjoying boating on this serene lake makes the trip to Manipal even more memorable.
Manipal sightseeing is incomplete without a visit to the Kapu Beach which boasts of a picturesque lighthouse. Sunsets and sunrises give an attractive silhouette view to this beach. This scenic site is not only a popular hangout place for tourists and locals, but also a famous shooting location for Bollywood films. A shack and a bar located here makes it an ideal beach. The Venugopal Temple, Smriti Bhawan and End Point are the other popular tourist spots of Manipal.
