Its a fantastic place managed by a Parsi family. Awesome food.. Rooms are not fancy, but good. Value for money. Non-intrusive environment. Truly, one can relax. I would rate it as one of the best places in the location.

Going back approximately a century in time, is this conglomeration of old bungalows, now aggregated to constitute Matherans finest destination for the discerning traveller. In its fifth (or is it the sixth) generation of ownership-and-management by the Family, the Lords, this remains the last of Matherans Parsee-run establishments. And it shows on the property - its upkeep, cleanliness, its adherance to meal-timings, and its detailed many-course lunches & dinners, served in a dinning room straight out of the pages of history - with the service done by waiters now themselves in the second generation (or more) of service at this top-drawer establishment. All presided over by its reigning Owner-Manager (see the pic) who personally, at this age, walks all over the premises, picking up some stray leaf here, or a bit off paper-waste there. The message is not lost upon the staff. She is also one of the most effective & staunch protectors of Mathetans fabled green-cover, its environment. Must meet - one of Matherans finest citizens. In terms of rooms - well, theyre all good but in order to avail the unique sight that (only) Lords affords you - take any of the four (or is it five) Valley Facing Rooms. They are a tad more expensive, but worth the incremental cost. (Lords also allows its guests a functional & clean swimming pool, ringed at one end by the property itself, and at the other end, by the surrounding hill-range). Any time of the year is good to visit, but personally my favourite period would be from mid-October till mid-February - the property remains shut for a few months during the monsoons. But a couple of hours from the maddening crush of Mumbai, remains this (Asias only) vehicle-free hill station, with a great family-run property to re-charge your senses ... what are you waiting for !!

Characterful Raj-era relic. As others have commented, the room facilities are Spartan but against that you have to set the peaceful atmosphere at the quieter end of the main street, the period bungalows (almost like beach huts), the substantial set meals (with some idiosyncratic and sometimes showy puddings), the family feel, pleasant staff, the early morning and afternoon tea brought to your room, the well-maintained pool and flowers, and the spectacular view from over the pool (it is worth getting a pool-facing room). Note: at present (early Feb 2018), the toy train is operating but only from near the car park to Matheran station because of a shortage of engines, there is no service from Neral although the track work is apparently finished. Porterage can be arranged through the hotel if you want to avoid hassle. We walked to the hotel from the car park on arrival (too late for the toy train), with porters carrying the luggage on their heads. On departure, we were able to catch the toy train to the car park, the porters taking the luggage by rickshaw. Tourist numbers are apparently down and we saw no other Europeans during our 3 night stay.

The location is fab very centrally located so the hotel seems to ride on it's laurels. We stayed in the hotel during the dusshera weekend ( 30th September to 2nd October). The hotel is just not worth the steep price we paid.(INR 6200+ 1000 per day) for 3 adults and a child in a family room breakfast included. The rooms were horrible with a misty smell, worn out white bedsheets, uncomfortable bedding and very old parsi antique furniture completely unmaintained. It seemed like time stood still post the 1900. The property can have its own charm of being heritage with its colonial style architecture but due to complete lack of mantainenece it's quite sad that we had to stay in utter basic facilities. Hot water is only available in the mornings (7:30-10:30).The bathrooms were so worn out with broken sinks, old worn out taps, chipped tiles and absolutely poor lighting, lack of plug points and the hotel lacked any modern interventions of having basic toiletries, adequate lighting and faces frequent power cuts although for short spurts. The valley view rooms were big enough to accommodate larger families and had a stunning view of the pool and a mountain but totally lacks basic maintainence and hygiene. The food is good though serving typical parsi cuisines which were the only saving grace to the hotel but on the whole Matheran now stands as place that has completely lost its charm and I wish that hill station was better taken care of. The travel to and fro to the hotel and dastur park is through pull carts, horse rides or a walk. Travelling through any of these means of transport happens after a lot of haggling and bargaining. Dastur park - Hotel ( push cart) 600/700 INR (use only if u are able to see 3 people struggle nd push u uphill) it's very defeating to see :( Horse rides Dastur park - Hotel INR 500/550 Coolies Dastur park - Hotel INR 250/350

Two nights at Lords and got rejuvenated. Lovely ambience in the traditional British bungalow, felt at home with a hospitable owner (Ms.Zenobia), friendly and helpful staff (Thanks Tukaramji), with the pet Rusty for company. We made a point to spend valuable time with Ms. Zenobia, heard stories from her early days st Pakistan, Kashmir and more than five decades at Matheran. "You are a vegetarian! You do miss some lovely delicacies" she quipped. We didn't miss much I would say, with veg Dhansak and quite a good offering of veg food, that too non-Gujarati food (that's what we otherwise get at Matheran). We had the lovely Valley view room, overlooking the swimming pool and the breathtaking valley beyond. Ideal if you want to laze with your family.
