I went with my family during monsoons which was an off season for Matheran. There were heavy rains but we really enjoyed every bit of it. Hotel Manager MR. Rather she and his team ensured a comfortable stay at the hotel. Food was made to order and we all (including kids) likes all the food preparations by the Chef. I would certainly go back to the same location and seriously recommend this property to people who loves to adventure in the midst of forest...

When you want no phones- no tv - no disturbance - this is the place for you to be absolutely with family. The morning chirping of birds, wake up call by monkeys- amazing hospitality and great history..!! Loved it completely.

Stuck in a Happy Space Close your eyes Imagine an uncomplicated space. No motor vehicles- people traveling by foot or astride horses or in hand pulled carts Imagine verdant foliage rich with fruit bearing as well as shade giving trees. Mud tracks leading everywhere and nowhere, no street lights- no light pollution allowing for stargazing Descriptions of 19th century living Sigh! We have lost this Xanadu forever Nevertheless, Mumbaikars yearning for a taste of such simpler times merely hitch their bags and head to the hill station Matheran, which is (happily) stuck in a time warp. For those yearning for a even greater dose of simplicity check into the heritage hotel - Veranda in the Forest. This hotel is about 4-5 kms from the parking point (Dasturi Parking) where you are required to leave your vehicles. There is also a narrow gauge (toy) train service from Neral, which did not seem fully operational during our visit. From there one is required to engage any of the modes of transport described above to reach The Veranda (Tip: Travel light preferably with a back pack). This hotel carries the 19th century living concept a bit further by allowing guests to soak into a blissful property which boasts of stone walls, wrought iron roof support and high roofs stretching over 15 feet. Vintage portraits of people and sceneries from a bygone era adorn the walls of the property maintained in pristine condition. The furniture on the property is also undeniably antique. To lend further authenticity to the settings the management sticks to a no TV, no wi-fi, no bottled water, no plastic policy The common areas comprising the Veranda (obviously), the sitting room and dining room act as catalysts for the forgotten art of conversation to develop. Board games are available aplenty for indulging and engaging the entire family. You can order for food and snacks to be served in any of these common spaces but be sure to order well in advance. Like people, all goods also have to transported from the foothill stations of Neral and Karjat using pack animals. Impromptu orders may result in disappointment. And yes, the management does not serve alcohol and alcoholic beverages on the property. So remember to carry your own liquor, which is not objected to. The Veranda - a Neemrana Group of (heritage) hotels property is under the management of the Dune Group since the last four months and is ably spearheaded by the genial onsite manager Mr Ritesh, who is attentive to every need of the guests.

A nice oldworld charm....it is around 180 years old....period furniture.. bathroom and fittings also of that era...but everything very well maintained neat and clean...the Varandha is the best part of the cottage where u can sit and enjoy the place the most...the place is very peaceful and quiet...very near the lake..but far from bazzar u hv to walk everytime u want to go.....horses and hand drawn rikshaws are available so elders and people with little children should think before booking. Food was ok.Breakfast - they should try and improve the spread....Manager and staff very helpful and go out of the way to attend to the guests request...loud noisy groups should certainly avoid this place as other guests come here to enjoy just for the peace and quiet of this place... kawill surely visit again....

I had never visited Matheran and no one wanted to go with me either (the usual brush off sentence: O! you haven't been to Matheran?!! Tch ... sorry, I've been there SO many times!)...anyhow, I did a research on places to stay ...any place...and from the looks of the posted pictures, I wasn't too encouraged to explore the town....till an office colleague insisted I stay at the Neemrana property - Vernadah in the Forest...I loved the looks of it and as a friend was visiting from my hometown (I'm not originally from Mumbai ), I promptly booked a room for two nights...And I'm glad that I did...It's a typical heritage property, clean, welcoming and has a calming charm about it. Note, no television in room. Breakfast served in the verandah...with hotel staff chasing away greedy monkeys with long poles...there's a machaan you can escape to, and you can go for a fairly peaceful walk down to the waterbody/mandir... While breakfast is included, you have to book your fixed menu dinner (not included in charges)...veg/non veg...you dine at one table, one of the longest dining tables you ever saw. You meet guests...it's quite old movie like...where you exchange views, smiles and perhaps phone numbers...The common living room/library etc transfers you to an Agatha Christie movie set...However, people looking for a ''peppy'' outing should avoid this place. It has simple food, holds the old world charm to its core, and, trust me, if you don't have a poet's or a dusted traveller's bone in you...you will feel it is a waste. But my like minded friends who crave for an outing for your soul, do visit it! ...even if just to laze around reading a book in the vernadah...
