I had never visited Matheran and no one wanted to go with me either (the usual brush off sentence: O! you haven't been to Matheran?!! Tch ... sorry, I've been there SO many times!)...anyhow, I did a research on places to stay ...any place...and from the looks of the posted pictures, I wasn't too encouraged to explore the town....till an office colleague insisted I stay at the Neemrana property - Vernadah in the Forest...I loved the looks of it and as a friend was visiting from my hometown (I'm not originally from Mumbai ), I promptly booked a room for two nights...And I'm glad that I did...It's a typical heritage property, clean, welcoming and has a calming charm about it. Note, no television in room. Breakfast served in the verandah...with hotel staff chasing away greedy monkeys with long poles...there's a machaan you can escape to, and you can go for a fairly peaceful walk down to the waterbody/mandir... While breakfast is included, you have to book your fixed menu dinner (not included in charges)...veg/non veg...you dine at one table, one of the longest dining tables you ever saw. You meet guests...it's quite old movie like...where you exchange views, smiles and perhaps phone numbers...The common living room/library etc transfers you to an Agatha Christie movie set...However, people looking for a ''peppy'' outing should avoid this place. It has simple food, holds the old world charm to its core, and, trust me, if you don't have a poet's or a dusted traveller's bone in you...you will feel it is a waste. But my like minded friends who crave for an outing for your soul, do visit it! ...even if just to laze around reading a book in the vernadah...

Dune Baar Hpuse is the closest getaway from Mumbai and the best in Matheran (I would say the best i have visited in any hill station), all the view points are in the vincity. infact the hotel is so cosy that we for the last two days was just in the huge bunglow enjoying the architeture and views from the place. No TV and less mobile range for the first two hours was a big problem but belive me later that was the biggest blessing, we had the best family outing in a long time. Food Yummy and organic, Dune is known for its organic food and they lived to their name. The chef made food to our choice (less spicy). The herbs were so fresh that we just enjoyed ate all our three days at the Barr. Staff are ver friendly and would help you to always with smilling face. Getting there : 1. Make sure you have some decent hill driving experience - some of the hairpin bends are the steep. 2. Parking can be a mess during peak season and weekends. Its on an open piece of land and finding a place to park can be quiet a hassle. 3. You can either walk yourself (you can get porters for your luggage) or take a hand pulled cart. for the adventurist - horse back. The toy train goes till the heart of matheran. About Matheran: 1. It is a 'walking' hill station so be prepared to walk - a lot! 2. During summers, the walking ways kick up red dust that sticks to footwear and clothes - so be prepared to have footwear that is practical and not fancy and fashionable.

Worth experiencing the Ancient architectural beauty and each room seems to be grander than the other one. Breath taking view and awesome food. Wedding Anniversary was so great thanks to the stay at this beautiful place

Lovely location. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Its very quiet, rooms are huge. The food was really good wih a lot of variety in the spread at the breakfast as well as dinner (we did not have lunch at the hotel).

We stayed at the Barr House in August 2017 during monsoons over the weekend. We booked directly through the hotel and the payment was made at the time of checkout. This property is almost at the end of Matheran, away from the clutter of other small resorts and the market, which makes the location a plus point. Another advantage of this location is that, it is close to 3-4 major points in Matheran, which are walk distance from the house. The lake is close by too. Property is a bit old, its well maintained and has an antique feel to it, but could have been cleaner. There is a nice garden around it, where you can actually hear birds chirping. Also, present is a small treehouse and a hammock. We stayed the in room "Peerbhoy". This is a small room and is just enough for 2 people and opens up to the grand verandah which is the USP of this place. The room has a poster bed which gives one a historic feeling and the bathroom has hot water, which is much needed during this season. Other than that, the room is quite basic, and has an outdoorsy feel. Breakfast is included and has basic options in continental and Indian. Lunch too has limited options. This could be improved and more options could be added. Food, however is fresh and tasty. Another speciality of this place, is the candlelit dinner which they serve to all guests together in the dining room. This is continental and is really well made and the waiters take extra effort to ensure that you enjoy the preparation. Place does not offer alcohol, however you are allowed to carry and use their fridge. The dinner for me was the highlight of this place. The only complain which I have is on the staff present in the house, they are not very welcoming and eager to assist the guests. Though, they did not create any problems, it would have improved our experience if they were more polite and helpful. This is what I am reducing 1 point for. Having seen other places in Matheran while passing by, I will definitely recommend this place as there does not seem to be anything close to it in this hill station. Suggestions: Serve better tea in the evenings along with some snacks, include more options in lunch and breakfast and train staff better to deliver quality service
