What's Good: I stayed in The Shade along with my family in 2 double rooms for 3 days. It is very far from Munnar city and we do not get anything nearby. For entire 3 days there was no cleaning of rooms. They never replaced bed sheets as well as bath towels. Food is very expensive. Absolutely no value for money.

Stayed here for 3 nights in June. Welcomed by the friendly host and his family and checked into our room which was very clean with incredible views across the hills and valleys. Breakfast was included but we had dinner each night at an extra cost. All home cooked and plenty of food! We had breakfast on the balcony overlooking the hills, perfect! The owner organised a trek for us with a local guide and and gave us water for our day our. Also helped us with troubles we were having with a taxi driver. Very helpful and would definitely return! Slight issues were the room seemed damp but this might be due to visiting in monsoon season. Also there was a slight smell of sewage coming from the sink.

The Shade is perched on the corner of an endlessly winding mountain road, poised like one of the many greater racket-tailed drongos that clasp the leaves of palm trees around it. It makes the most of its excellent location. Huge windows surround its rooms, giving them a tropical outpost vibe. There is something magical about living among the canopy like that. Santosh and his family were unfailingly helpful and we enjoyed the food we ate there (particularly the plentiful papadums that we greedily devoured, crumbs and all).

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Shade. Wonderful mountain views, hiked in the tea plantations, swam in the river, had some delicious home-cooked dinners, there's a nice 5 km circle walking route we did every day as well. Our host was very helpful, answered all our questions and arranged a driver to take us to Varkala.

We stayed here as we wanted somewhere more remote and touristy than Munnar. The journey getting there by bus was not something I want to repeat - Indian bus drivers do not seem to fear death in the way other mere mortals do! However, the views at this homestay were amazing and I am really glad I made the trip. We were there on our own the first day and had a brilliant breakfast served on the terrace. We didn't venture far that day, so we had dinner there too and that was equally delicious. There isn't a great deal to do in the area other than admire the scenery, and that is just what we wanted - however it might be a bit too remote for some people, and Munnar is a good 20-30 minute away. The following day we were joined by some other guests and we all ate together in the house - again, the food was lovely. The host is very friendly and helpful, and gave us a view of his land and explained what he was growing. He also gave us some helpful travel tips. I wish we could have stayed longer as I would happily have sat on the terrace reading my book and enjoying the wonderful sights and sounds. The accommodation was also clean, modern, and well equipped - with a lovely hot shower and fabulous views over the valley. Would highly recommend.

Fantastic homestay which was clean, comfortable and spacious. Breakfast each morning served on the balcony was perfect, and we ended up having dinner at the Shade every night the food was so good! Views are idyllic from the rooms. Santosh was so helpful arranging treks and tours of the area. The Shade is not very close to Munnar (20min bus ride) but this was not a problem.
