Nagercoil, a beautiful town and the headquarters of Kanyakumari district, is located in the state of Tamil Nadu. This place and its nearby areas were earlier known as Nanjilnadu. Temples, waterfalls and several other places to visit in Nagercoil make it a popular tourist destination of the state.
Religious centres, such as the Nagaraja Temple, Thanumalayan Temple and St. Francis Xavier's Church are among the popular Nagercoil tourist places. The presiding deity of the Nagaraja Temple is Lord Nagaraja, who is considered to be the king of snakes. The devotees, as their reverence, offer milk to the deity. One of the interesting facts is that the town has been named after the Nagaraja Temple. Another popular religious centre in the town is the Thanumalayan Temple, which attracts a large number of devotees from all over the country. This temple is named after three Hindu Gods, namely Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. While in Nagercoil, tourists can also visit the St. Francis Xavier's Church, which was constructed in 1600 AD. Besides, they can pay obeisance at Krishnancoil, a shrine dedicated to the childhood avatar of Lord Krishna.
The Nagercoil sightseeing is incomplete without visiting the Mukkadal Reservoir, Thirparappu Falls and Boothapandi. Nagercoil demonstrates a blend of Tamil and Malayali culture and tradition. Several festivals, such as Pongal, Ayya Vaikunda Avataram, Deepavali, Christmas and St. Francis Xavier's Feast are celebrated here with great enthusiasm.
