We stayed at Master Guesthouse for our 3rd time in Feb/Mar 2018. We have previously stayed here in Oct/Nov 2010 and Aug 2014, and choose to stay here because we are so well looked after by Ushi, Avnish and their team. It's a great soft landing for first timers in India; and for those who return again and again, it's lovely to meet new travellers and swap knowledge about places to visit. Our lovely hosts, Ushi and Avnish (owners) are professional, knowledgeable and experienced, and go out of their way to make you feel welcomed in their home. We have previously used an external travel company to make our arrangements here, but have booked directly on the last 2 occasions. Ushi was very thorough in arranging our stay, and all details were finalised and confirmed prior to our arrival so everything regarding our room, inclusions/exclusions, tours and payments were clear and understood upfront. This makes the trip far easier because it's all taken care of, and any changes can be discussed with Ushi or Avnish with ease. We also discussed transport with Ushi, as it can be difficult at the best of times to find reliable transport, and it can be difficult to know who to trust if you're in an unfamiliar environment. Ushi also offered that we could contact them at any time if we were unsure of our driver, if there has been a communication issue with drivers, shop assistants or guides, or if we needed further assistance. She is happy to speak directly with whoever it may be to clarify any issues or translate any details as required. This gives you peace of mind - especially if you fall victim to someone trying to scam or swindle you, or if the driver doesn't understand where to go, which can happen in any city. Avnish is a wealth of information regarding tours in India. I love spending time chatting with Ushi and Avnish about places to go and things to do in Delhi, and they can also offer great information about other cities, and how to maximise your time by planning out the order of sites you want to visit based on the time you have during your stay which is very handy. Avnish offers wonderful tour packages to a variety of cities, and can take you through some lesser known areas that you may not see with other tour companies. We had a great time visiting some hidden antique shops in the back streets of Old Delhi during this visit!! Although we had been to the backstreets of Old Delhi with another company previously, Avnish took us to areas we had not seen before!! We found a treasure trove of amazing items to look at or purchase (in my case)! We're looking forward to our next visit!!

Every time I go to Delhi, this is the place where I stay though I do have friends and relatives in Delhi. The reason- Urvashi and Avnish are the kind of hosts who go out of their way to make you feel at home. Avnish has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to Delhi and his passion for the city is obvious when he talks to you. He knows about the off beat places that no tour guide or travel agency will tell you about. Urvashi is soft spoken and a lovely hostess. I must also mention that though I have bothered them at the last moment for a room or for transportation, they have never said no. I remember once I had to join my husband in Chandigarh and needed a room for the night urgently. This lovely couple not only gave me a room for the night but also booked a room for both of us during our return. The prices are reasonable, the food is good and the rooms are so well maintained. What more could you ask? In case you are new to Delhi, please talk to Avnish before you make plans to hire a guide since Delhi, like any other tourist city in the wold, has its share of scams. Just so that you are not cheated. Looking forward to another stay with Urvashi and Avnish.

My friend and I stayed at Masters for 3 nights while in Delhi. It was recommended by a good friend who had stayed there 2 years prior. Here are the positives: The home is lovely, art pieces are everywhere, the room we shared was comfortable, the system in place for ordering meals is organized, food prices are reasonable and taste good, the Chai is excellent! the location of the guesthouse is fairly central to many sights, markets and tourist attractions. The +/- : The couple who owns and operates Master's, husband's name is Avnish, the wife, (I cannot recall her name) is lovely. Both are educated, kind, agreeable, and wish to accommodate their guests giving them the "hidden jewels" tour/experience of Delhi. These tours can get pricey compared to others I later found out about at other guesthouses. Though they offer personalize tours, and Delhi is relatively inexpensive compared to other travel locations, I think this couple raises the prices because they can by suggesting that they are offering a tour "unlike any else". In that I do not know much about Delhi, any tour would have sufficed for a lower price. Avnish talks a lot, almost non-stop and treats his guests like they are in a lecture. He often name-drops, which gets tedious, and seemed irrelevant. Because of this I was not interested in spending 4+ hours on a tour with him if he would just be talking non-stop but not actually engaging with his guests, and he was not pleased that we opted out of the tour set for the next day, and proceeded to tell us how much we will be missing out. It was kind of shaming and unnecessary bc we were his guests and he was the reason we did not want to be stuck with him. The negatives: My friend made the arrangements via email weeks/months before our trip to stay at the guest house and we were given a written amount of the cost of a day trip to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. That was written as between 5000-8000 INR for the trip with car, driver, gas. Our trip cost 11,000 INR. Avnish did not honor the email that his wife wrote and while she was out of town the day we took the trip, he made no effort to contact her, to discuss the price discrepancy with her or reduce the 11,000 he was charging us. We showed him a print-out of her email and he remarked with the claim that the additional costs were because we had needed a fuller sized SUV due to the demands upon the wheels of the vehicle for a long distance trip, thus a larger vehicle was required. When the 7+ passenger SUV arrived to pick us up on the day of, we just got in, not knowing this larger ride was costing us much more. If I had known I would have chosen a smaller vehicle. Also, the roads were fine and I saw many vehicles that were regular 4 passenger cars driving alongside of us on the road trip there and home. An unfortunate thing also happened during our trip to Agra which Avnish did not handle it well. I add this story bc a different group of friends that we travelled with mentioned a similar scam that occurred to them and I think it's a common scheme. Upon entering Agra, our driver drove through the town before going to the Taj Mahal itself. The driver then stopped and met a young man who climbed into our vehicle and told us he was our tour guide for visiting the Taj. I asked the tourguide to show me his badge, and he was not happy to be second guessed but he did and he insisted that he was intended to guide us for the day. In that we did not arrange the entire day tour (the wife had days before), we were confused if this tour guide was included in the plans or not. Also our driver did not speak much English and we were challenged when asking him is this was part of our tour, what we ordered, etc. The guide just kept insisting that this was part of our day trip. In that we were dependent on the driver and he seemed to know the guide, we felt a bit compelled to just say yes, so as to not mess up our ride home since we were dependent to return to Delhi with this driver. The tour guide was less than polite, had terrible English and mumbled. He rushed us through the Taj, did not wish to answer any of our curious questions about the gardens and only kept to his script. He insisted that we not buy anything at the local stores just outside of the park gates and kept us moving to catch the shuttle bus to get to our driver. We felt really pushed on and rushed. He said he would take us to better shops with better prices for gifts and what no but he took us to a precious stone/furniture shop and a jewelry shop; both places give you a little tour of their process/history/ quality products then expect you to purchase something. We just wanted a book about the Taj and to take our time then drive home but we actually spent an extra 2 hours touring these places, all without our consent. It felt very uncomfortable and wasted our time. Then the guide expected a tip, and hung around until we gave him one, then just vanished. We heard later that the tour guide and driver usually will split the tip and have made arrangements prior to arriving in Agra. The whole thing felt icky. When Avnish asked about our trip to Agra, we told him what occurred and he was appropriately upset but told us it was our error because he gave us his mobile # and told us we should have called him when this occurred at the time of to sort this out. We told him we did not think to call him because what could he have done and he insisted we could "always say no." Avnish then called the driving company and got the driver fired, then offered us (his guests) a complementary tea to soothe our nerves. The whole experience felt unfortunate and then the next day, when we got the bill for this trip which - as mentioned above - was highly inflated, felt like a big disappointment. Overall, I think staying here is fine, but don't be shy to discuss every single price prior to accepting service. I realize it was our naivete to not discuss everything, but we thought we were. Also, we made most of our travel and tour trips with the wife, but as she was not at home during our check out, Avnish was the person who ultimately collected the money, and he was clearly not that upset to take our money even if we were disappointed with the service provided.

We had an exceptional service at this place with great room, great location- near to Gangaram hospital and great home made food. The host are great people and went out of the way to provide all the required pointers as we were new to the place. The price is also reasonable and you cannot beat the warmth and love they bring. Just felt like another home. Thanks to the Hosts for providing all the assistance in making the Gangram visit a stress free experience!! You folks really made the health trip to Delhi a very nice experience.

I lucked out booking here on my first trip to Delhi. Lovely helpful hosts, spacious well equipped rooms, and excellent breakfasts, evening meals. Speaking to other guests it seems that lots of people come back time after time, and I can understand why. If you are a first timer then book their airport transfer as it can be a bit difficult to locate otherwise. 100% recommended.
