Charmingly embellished by mother nature, Nilgiri is a miscellany of more than 24 mountain peaks that cover the westernmost part of Tamil Nadu. Owing to its position in the high-edged Western Ghats, Nilgiri is rightly called the 'Blue Mountains'. Doddabetta Peak, a popular tourist site, is the highest point of the Nilgiri. Freshwater lakes, cascading waterfalls, pristine rivers and bubbling streams bejewel this terrain of India. Breathtakingly beautiful hill stations, fruit encumbered orchards, dense gardens of tea and age-old temples speckling the area make Nilgiri sightseeing an experience of a lifetime.
Ooty is the headquarters as well as one of the ultimate attractions in Nilgiri. Unfolding at an altitude of 7,350 ft in the Nilgiri Hills, Ooty presents the tourists a vibrant atmosphere. An invigorating weather and a number of tourist attractions, including Ooty Lake, Stone House, Ooty Botanical Gardens and Toda Huts, coalesce to leave every tourist coming to Ooty enthralled. Coonoor and Kotagiri, two other picturesque hill stations perched on the Nilgiri Hills, are frequented by millions of tourists every year.
Blessed with rich flora and fauna, Nilgiri houses some of the famous national parks and forest reserves of India. Most noteworthy is the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve that covers a vast area of 5520 sq km. Tourists will be amazed to know that it also forms a part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. During a Nilgiri tour, tourists must visit the marvellous waterfalls of the region. The Kolkambai Fall, gushing unbroken from a height of 400 ft, is the highest waterfall of Nilgiri. Halashana Falls, Catherine Falls and Kalhatti Falls are some of the other waterfalls in the area.
