Orchha, adorned with a number of archaeological marvels, is a popular tourist destination that lies in the Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh. This historic town was founded by Maharaja Rudra Pratap Singh in the year 1501. The most interesting thing about Orchha is the presence of attractive cenotaphs, which are also known as 'Chhatris'. These cenotaphs were built on the banks of the Betwa River in the 16th century by the rulers of the Bundela Dynasty. Tourists can climb over these dome-like cenotaphs to get an expansive view of the majestic river.
The Raja Mahal, Rai Parveen Mahal and Jahangir Mahal, which constitute the fort complex, are the most popular places to visit in Orchha. Visited by a large number of tourists every year, the splendid Jahangir Mahal is a perfect manifestation of the Mughal architecture. The Ram Raja Temple, dedicated to Lord Rama, is another place of tourist interest located in the city. Orchha also homes the Chaturbhuj Temple, an ancient shrine with a history that dates back to the 9th century. Dedicated to the Hindu deity Vishnu, this shrine exhibits the Shikhara architectural style.
During the Orchha trip, the historic and beautiful Phool Bagh should not be missed by visitors. This picturesque garden houses a subterranean structure, which once served as a halting place for the Orchha rulers in the summers. The Sunder Mahal, Laxminarayan Temple, Jujhar Singh Palace, Chandreshekhar Azad Memorial and Palaki Memorial are some other interesting tourist places of Orchha.
