Two nights at Olappamanna Mana homestay were included on the itinerary of our recent visit to Kerala. We enjoyed the hospitality of our hosts, their unique home cooked food and the opportunities of conversations with them. Also the heritage accommodation. We applaud their efforts to preserve the culture of their region, including Kathakali drama which we witnessed. It was a very powerful depiction of an ancient story and the acting and music were excellent. However, in the opinion of this reviewer it is a genre that may be likened to European classical opera and approached with the same degree of commitment to follow the unfolding plot, in this case for three and a half hours. Drumming and singing is integral to the performance. Unfortunately, and probably unnecessarily, the singers were amplified and earplugs were a useful aid to minimising the discomfort. Not withstanding, the high levels of skill, professionalism, endurance and artistry of the performers were very much appreciated. Olappamanna Mana is warmly recommended for tourists with an interest in South Indian culture and who seek an authentic homestay experience in heritage accommodation.

It was a privilege to stay on this wonderful, old estate. Mr and Mrs Damodaran were very friendly and welcoming. They were keen to share their fascinating heritage with us. We were even able to take part in a puja ceremony for their goddess Kali which was an amazing experience. Mrs Damodaran is an extremely good cook and it was lovely eating with the family. Our only regret is that we were only able to stay for one night. If you want to find out more about Keralan Brahmin culture this is a place not to be missed.

This homestay is located on a property owned by a high-caste Brahmin family. The property was once much larger in size but has been reduced because much of the land has been handed over to local families who worked as employees for many centuries. The property is a little run-down but the hosts made us feel very welcome and the food was excellent and vegetarian. Our room was somewhat basic. It was situated in the upstairs of a building next door to the temple. I enjoyed sitting on the large verandah outside the room from where I could watch daily activities going on around me. A highlight of our visit was the presence of a small elephant in the compound next to the accommodation building. This elephant had been brought in for an important religious festival. We joined the procession for the festival and walked down the streets to the temple along with the elephant and people beating drums and playing horns. It was a special experience.
