An art gallery / home stay that is easy on your pocket and a stone's throw away from the beach

This was an impromptu trip and was finalized at the 11th hour. Rightly so as we had a long weekend coming up and yours truly decided on pondicherry on the spur of the moment purely for enjoying the calm beach kind of vacation. So we started from Bangalore at 9ish (P.M) and were expected to reach Puducherry by 2-3 A.M. Following Google's suggested route turned out to be a bad decision that we made and landed up only by 4 A.M. So along the way we made several calls to several homestays, hotels, lodgings.. only to be told that the rooms are full and even the high end hotels quoted the same. The only place within our budget and within 500m of the beach was Aurodhan Heritage guesthouse.
PROS- Well maintained and curated by Parash Chettri, it is exactly what one would expect a art gallery based hotel to be like.
Spacious halls and airy, clean four poster beds in the bedrooms which have walls dotted with paintings and various sculptures.
Pet friendly- some guest had got their dog along which was provided a place to stay nex tot the room.
Stone's throw away from the beach.
Very close to Arumigul Vinayagar temple and Aurobindo ashram.
Swiggy delivers food to this location.
CONS - rooms are situated on 2nd floor and there are no lifts.

Lalit Verma is a gifted artist and proprietor of both an exquisite art gallery and a handsome guest house. The guest house is often used as an artistic retreat for international artists. But it is also used as a guest house. It is in a good neighborhood. The place is neat and clean. Nice bathrooms. And beautiful art of all kinds over all the walls including the bedrooms. The common spaces are very inviting. The host is of international renown.

Had a great time here at the Aurodhan. Fantastic staff, happy and cheerful. Manager very informative and helpful. Rooms clean, spacious and full of character. Looking forward to my return visit as this city is so full of architectural gems being restored.

I wanted to show my brother Pondicherry and the Aurodahn Heritage Guest House was a wonderful experience for him. Not only were the staff, especially the manager, extremely friendly and helpful, the acvommadation was clean and comfortable. The history of the guest house was very interesting and as my brother enjoys visiting historical homes and buildings all over the world, he was very pleased to stay in such a wonderfully restored house. I would certainly return to Pondicherry and look forward to staying here again.

Don't hesitate. Detailed review! :)

I came to Pondicherry for 3 days and stayed at Aurodhan from the 22nd to the 25th of February. I was a solo traveller, and a first timer at that. I read about Aurodhan on Quora and was completely taken up by it. So I cancelled a prior booking I had made at another hotel and got in touch with Krtatma (through the contact number on the site). From the first phone call, Krtatma was super hospitable and easily accessible through call or text. I immediately booked my room and transferred the necessary amount. Remember, this amount is not exactly refundable, but I didn't have a problem with that.
Fast forward to reaching Pondicherry on the 22nd; Krtatma went well out of his way to make sure I was comfortable, he even picked me up from the main bus stand since I was travelling alone. The duration of the stay was excellent, and the location of the guest house couldn't have been better! The Promenade beach is only 5 minutes away, and the whole of White Town is easily accessible from here if you don't mind walking around (which is something I strongly suggest). You get to knowing your way around in a matter of a day.
The manager Paras is wonderful and very helpful, in case you need anything he is only a call away. There is a kitchen area so you can always bring takeaway and microwave it at any time.
There are no restrictions on timings as such, you can come and go at any time of the day or night you wish!
Once you book the room, the room is yours for the entire duration of the stay and no one will interfere with it. It's so safe that I used to leave the door unlocked when I left for the day, which is saying a lot. Krt also always checked up on me to see if I was having any issues and if I needed any kind of help.
The room itself (I stayed in 121) is nicely furnished, with a high four poster bed and a low step to help you climb it if you need it. The geyser is functional, as is the air conditioner. So you have everything you need :)
By now, you also realise that the hosts are the sweetest people ever so don't hesitate to book your stay at Aurodhan. Unless you're coming with expectations of seven star VIP facilities. In which case not only will you make their lives hell but also your own. So if you're considering the place, get in touch with Krtatma yourself, he'll make your decision concrete! Clear with him any doubts you may have and ask all the necessary details.
This huge space is not even enough for me to tell you how much I loved my experience at Aurodhan. For the next time I come to Pondicherry, I won't even dream booking my stay anywhere else.
I'd give the place a 10 on 10, in fact, I have.
P.S. I left my camera back in the room, and not only did they get in touch with me immediately, but also offered to courier it to me at the earliest. If that doesn't do it for you, I don't know what will!
