Not a great place to stay. Rooms were not so clean, they were small. Food provided was also just ok. staff were good though. Requires a lot of maintenance activity. You can only dtay for a very short while maybe for a day or 2.

By far the worst place I have ever stayed. Absolutely filthy (I really mean it, at least 2cm of thick dust on the fan that goes everywhere when switched on), at appeared as though someone had emptied an ashtray all over the floor, sheets were not changed (asked for clean ones and told I had to it myself). The room was so hot it was unbearable, and of course if you put the fan on you need a mask. Window opened directly into the main lobby where the staff hang out and talk (so they can watch you sleeping if you have it open!) I urge you to pay a tiny bit more and stay elsewhere.

Within an hour of checking in to my room(# 13 !!) at this centrally located old, attractive but grubby hotel my room which I had locked with MY OWN PADLOCK had been entered and 3,500 rupees(~~$53.00) stolen from my briefcase. I reported it the next day to the Grand Bazaar police station and that evening 1,700 of those same rupees in the same ziplock and with the same elastic band from my checked luggage tag showed up under the bedside table.I was encouraged by the police to stay there another day or two in hopes of more of the stolen cash being returned.I cleaned the room for several hours during this time and prayed for good karma. They refunded an additional 1,500 rupees minus the 300 rupee/ night tariff to meat checkout. My Canon PowerShot,Bluetooth speaker, medical hemostats and a flashlight disappeared from my bag as well and none of these items came back to me. This would have been a fairly pleasant cheap architecturally interesting place had I not been robbed in such a brazen way.At the end even the police grew weary of my entreaties to have my other things returned. Avoid this hotel like it was the bubonic plague.

I arrived around 11 in the evening & as I was checking in, a huge rat scurried across the man sleeping on the floor in the front hall (Maybe he was staff?). I went to my room to find that the bathroom looked like it was from a horror movie. The windows are barred & open to the air which meant there were plenty of other criters lurking. I booked the "deluxe room" which I now understand just meant that I had the choice of 4 beds... I was kind of hoping it meant that there would be a bathroom I wouldn't contract anything from. I saw a huge beetle on the bed next to me & realized that was probably who the other 3 beds were for.. I didn't sleep the whole night & desperately searched hotels that nearby that would except me the next day! Be that as it may, the staff was very nice & did make me feel like I was safe staying there, they were quite kind despite the state of the room.. So overall I would say this place is for the very desperate and/or very broke. ($8 CAD/ night!). The REALLY excellent location & very cheap price is why I chose it originally; I was budgeting but this felt extreme.. Proceed with caution.

We arrived in Pondicherry on Pongal Saturday and so faced with nowhere else to stay ended up in the Raj Lodge. It wasn't a pleasant experience. The room hadn't been cleaned before so there was rubbish including cigarette butts in the toilet and used toiletries in the room. The other guests were all male, there didn't seem to be any other women apart from my partner and another lady we travelled with. It was noisy all night, there was a sewage smell coming into the room from outside and there was no sink. At least the outside is painted in a nice yellow colour. Only stay if desperate
