Porbandar is the exalted city which marks the birthplace of 'Father of the Nation' Mahatma Gandhi as well as Lord Krishna's childhood friend Sudama. Located along the Arabian Sea in the state of Gujarat, this coastal city was originally a fortified town. Today, it stands among India's most visited travel destinations due to the presence of a number of attractions. Porbandar tourist places are contributing immensely in uplifting the tourism in the city and making it popular among other nations.
The most significant places to visit in Porbandar are the temples of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and Sudama. Kirti Mandir, built in the memory of Mahatma Gandhi, is adjacent to Gandhi's ancestral house. This shrine houses large paintings of Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba. The Sudama Mandir, which is the only temple of Sudama in India, is a beautiful shrine where hundreds of people come to pay obeisance.
Another attraction in the city is the Darbargadh Fort which is a fortified palace built by Rana Sartanji. The large mansions with classic wooden doors are live examples of yesteryears architectural proficiency. Huzoor Palace, which was built in the 20th century by the last ruler of Princely State of Porbandar, Rana Natwarsinhji, is also an interesting site. Other places of interest in and around Porbandar include the Bharat Mandir, Gayatri Mandir, Gita Mandir, Swaminarayan Mandir, Kamla Nehru Park, Chowpatty Beach and Nehru Planetarium.
Apart from Porbandar sightseeing, tourists like exploring shopping streets which sell Gujarati sarees, Gharcholu and Odhani. Being in Porbandar, they also enjoy treating their taste buds to dishes like Suter Pherni, Undhyo, Doodha Pak and Kadhi.
