Once a quiet hamlet located to the southwest of Andhra Pradesh, Puttaparthi gained worldwide recognition when it became the home of the spiritual guru Sri Sathya Sai Baba. Born as Satyanarayana Raju on 23 November 1926, Sri Sathya Sai Baba was venerated as a reincarnation of the Shirdi Sai Baba when he was just 14. Possessed by the divine since childhood, Sri Sathya Sai Baba is famed worldwide and has a large group of followers. Much before his death in 2011, Sri Sathya Sai Baba built an ashram in 1950, known as Prashanthi Nilayam, for tourists and devotees who undertake Puttaparthi tour.
Prashanthi Mandir within the ashram is an ideal place to pay reverence to the saint while Vata Vruksha just behind is a perfect meditation site. The birthplace of Sri Sathya Sai Baba is another prominent location, besides other places to visit in Puttaparthi like Gopalaswami Temple, Hanuman Temple, Satyabhama Temple, Sri Raju Kalyan Mandapam and Ganesha Temple. Tourists can also pay a visit to the Sarva Dharma Stupa, Village Mosque, Sai Kulwant Hall, Gayathri Mandir and Subramanya Mandir. Those who are interested in knowing about stars and plants can visit the Planetarium built within Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning.
To experience the scenic beauty in Puttaparthi, visitors can plan a trip to the Chitravati River that is named after the pious new Ganges. Activities in this religious town mainly revolve around listening to discourses at the ashram, praying at the temples and buying memorabilia to take back home. However, the scenic town of Puttaparthi offers plenty birdwatching opportunities as well; particularly after the onset of rains. Much like most of Andhra Pradesh, winter season lasting from October through March is the best time to travel Puttaparthi.
