Founded by Raja Rokeshar in the 11th century, Ropar is one of the oldest towns of Punjab. It is located at a point from where the Sutlej River emerges from the Shivalik Hills and meets the plains of Punjab. Also known as Rupnagar, the town has great historical, cultural and religious importance. There are many worth visiting sites in and around Ropar that captivate tourists coming from all over the world.
Being discovered in six cultural periods by archaeologists, Ropar displays the golden era of Indian history. Tourists can visit the archaeological museum of Ropar where a number of antiquities in addition to the photographs of excavation materials are showcased. Apart from this museum, tourists can visit Anandpur Sahib, which is a shrine located at a distance of 40 km from Ropar. Gurudwara Bhatta Shahib, situated at the outskirts of Ropar, is another place of religious importance.
There are a few temples in Ropar that were built in the medieval period and re-built later on. Jateshwar Mahadev Temple, situated on the Ropar-Nurpur road is one of them, which is frequently visited by devotees from various parts of Punjab and neighbouring states. Other Ropar attractions that a tourist should definitely visit are Maharaja Ranjit Singh Bagh and Gurudwara Sadabarat. If time permits, travellers can also pay a visit to the place where Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Lord William Bentick signed a treaty on various boundary issues. Besides sightseeing, boating, bird watching and long distance swimming are the other things to do in Ropar.
