Shahapur is a beautiful town located in the Thane District of Maharastra. Home to the major plants of Jindal Steel and Liberty Oil, this is a growing industrial town of the region. Besides, it is the biggest taluka of the district. The presence of lakes in and around Shahapur makes the town abundant in natural resources. A Shahapur trip can be made interesting by visiting nearby metropolitan cities like Mumbai and Pune. In addition, the quaint hill station of Matheran is at a distance of about 85 km from Shahapur.
An interesting fact about Shahapur is that almost all of Mumbai's water is supplied from here and so, the government has declared the site as a 'No Chemical Zone'. Due to this reason, unlike other cities, Shahapur is free of pollution and waste materials emitted by chemical industries. There are few places to visit in Shahapur which will keep visitors occupied during their stay here. Apart from places within the town, tourists can visit the Gurudwara and Manas Temple at stone's throw from the town. Furthermore, sightseeing in and around Shahapur gives tourists an opportunity to see the attractive Sahyadris or Western Ghats. These mountain ranges, which have been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, surround the beautiful town and enhance its delightfulness.
Mahuli and Aaja are fascinating places in the vicinity of Shahapur which are immensely popular for trekking and thus broaden the parameters of Shahapur tourist places. The Mahuli Fort is located at the highest point in Thane at an altitude of 2815 m. The surrounding forest of Mahuli has been declared as a sanctuary. An interesting structure here is the open Shiva temple which has a drinking water cistern.
