I never imagined staying in a houseboat in Kashmir, but never expected such amazing quality and warmth. Spellbound by the intricate artwork of this amazing handcrafted vessel, we were met by the owner who's warm welcome and amazing historic journey of the Taj of the water mesmerised us. Each room on this houseboat has a history of artisans that worked to create a true work of art. The serenity of the lake coupled with the houseboats made this our most memorable find in India.

A small quayside by the lake is where you find your shikara, a beautiful painted, canopied, flat-bottomed boat that is the water taxi that takes to your home. What a way to approach Mascot One as the large spade paddle guides you through a large group of crested grebes, silently. Then there is the greeting and renewal of our strong friendship with the whole family; we have been five times now and this is our home from home. I have written before about the houseboat and its wonderful construction and carving that still takes me by surprise, it is superb in every respect. After dumping our bags, its up to the roof deck to see the kingfishers, bulbuls, hoopoes and as ever a wonderful sunset. September is a really good time of year to go. This time I wanted to see a bit more of the city and the Jama Masjid. This was founded by Sikandar in 1402 CE and has burnt down three times; everything is made of cedar wood here and the 378 columns are 50 high, just amazing. This was the same iconoclastic Sultan who smashed the famous Hindu temple at Martand. Kashmir is full of contradictions. My wife and I love it as has everyone else we have met. Yet our Government Travel advice is very discouraging due to the ongoing troubles and says one should only go if necessary and then stick to the city. We have been fortunate to be in the care of Mascot who know whats going on. I think it would be irresponsible not to mention this as we know people who wont go to Kashmir for this reason only and of course one has to be sensible and realistic. The FCO is now saying similar things about parts of Kerala. But one cannot travel on a risk-free planet. The UK has its problems too. One only has to think of the watery landscape, the Mughal Gardens, Chinar trees, the sinuous river Jhelum flowing through the city towards the Indus and the Valley flanked by the Himalayan Mountain Range and the Pir Panjal Range, and the pull of Kashmir comes back. Until the next time.

This was my 5th visit to Kashmir and it wont be my last. This time it was for 6 nights. I love the place, the people, the boats. Why would you stay in a hotel when you can stay on a beautiful hand crafted houseboat smelling of cedar wood, and full of local crafts such as carpets, hand carved furniture made from walnut? I could go on! You can do just as much using the boat as a base, as from a hotel. You will be surrounded by Nageen Lake with its birds, trees and the distant chatter from the occasional fisherman and the silent shikaras floating by. The moon and stars are so clear in this unpolluted place. It is a privilege to feel a part of the Tuman Family and learn of local life as well as go on trips to Pahalgam and Gulmarg or where ever you wish. Over the years I have learnt some of their history (family as well as some of Kashmir). Sufism was new to me and now I love to read of it and see how they lead their lives. We were lucky enough to attend a Sufi gathering and hear wonderful music and meet amazing people. Mascot and Srinagar have everything . We have even made lifelong friends there who love it as we do. I could go on for ever because I love it all and feel a part of it. Now withdrawal is setting in!! I should say that the boats are clean and very comfortable, the bathrooms are modern, the food is excellent and you will be cared for as never before.

We were at Mascot 1 (theme suit) that had good view and feel of the Nigeen lake. This was last week of December and sub-zero temperatures. There is an open terrace giving unobstructed feel of the lake. Service levels and comfort are taken care. If seclusion and quite is what you are looking for, this fits the bill.

We stayed in the Emperor suite for a few day in late September 2018. Showkat and his staff were exemplary hosts. We were even invited, along with other guests, to eat a feast with locals as we arrived on a feast day. Showkat's driver Mama was kind enough to driver us over the Zoji La pass to Leh. Between the level of genuine hospitality and the quality of the boat itself, the Mascot must surely be one of, if not the best boat on Nageen lake.
